Professional Advice For Aspiring Models:

Modelvision-TV

Model Valencia 2008 from on .

Developing Your Modeling Craft & Image: Working with professional photographers who are thoroughly familiar with print advertising and fashion eliminates the need for a "modeling school." If a photographer finds you particularly photogenic, she or he may provide portfolio pictures for you on an exchange barter basis. Photographers also have portfolios they use in promoting themselves with advertising agencies, publishers and catalog designers. You provide the photographer with poses for her or his portfolio and, in turn, you receive pictures that begin or add to your portfolio. In addition, you learn varied types of posing, expression, illustration, the visual creative arts and you get a sense of what modeling is. While it is a glamorous profession, it is also very hard work and extremely competitive. Know this from the very start. The same holds true for acting. You are competing with tens of thousands of other aspirings who are as, if not more, qualified than you.

Portfolio & Promotion Pictures: Typically, a model has taken between one and three hundred poses to comprise the fifteen or twenty she will use in her portfolio and as promotional hand outs. Posing for thirty photos, even fifty, is simply not enough. The competition is staggering. Just as a scene in a major Hollywood movie may undergo fifty or sixty takes each, so you need fifty or sixty images of just one type of pose (i.e. headshot, a particular category of fashion, and so forth). Yes, without a barter arrangement with a good, experienced in the field photographer, it will be quite expensive. That's the modeling business. And cheap or free pictures from an amateur, semi-pro, or out of industry (wedding, family portrait) photographer may knock you our of the box altogether. When someone from a major modeling or advertising agency spots less than on-target modeling pictures, she or he will not even interview the model further, if at all. Resume/Statistic Sheet: With your pictorial hand-out/send-out, you should include a resume, if you have previous modeling credits, with statistics of your measurements (see below), clothing sizes, height (without shoes), correct weight (less clothing), and noting any permanent marks or scars anywhere on your body. If you have no modeling credits to date, then include a statistics sheet with the aforementioned data.

The "Go-Sees:" Models and actors pounding the pavement in a major market (LA, NYC, Chicago) are most of the time "going on go-sees," trade lingo for visiting modeling agencies, casting directors, advertising agencies, etc. It can be a several mile stretch. Going to an "open call" may find you in the midst of many hundred competitors, each as eager and confident as you (self-confidence is a must, but not egotistical arrogance). Many major modeling agencies have specific days and times when they will interview. Call and ascertain the current open interview schedule, they are subject to change. Do not attempt to visit the modeling agency office at any other time unless they direct you to with a specific appointment. Being prompt and prepared goes without saying. If it is for a call for, say, a jeans ad, don't show up in a dress as vice versa. Be the image they seek, not what you prefer. Use professionals for make-up and hair style, or at least use the advice of one who knows the commercial field. Lighting differs for film, television and still (print) photography, learn about the proper make-up for each.

Image Projection: While modeling (and acting) jobs have their specified images (i.e. an ingenue mom, a business conservative executive, a streetwise cop), you also have your own particular personna image that fits you. The possibilities are endless, but the image you generally project must fit your physical appearance, age range, personality and charisma (without charisma, there is no model). Accentuate your positives, be it eyes, teeth, hair, figure or legs. A professional model must be outgoing, charismatic and uninhibited.

The Various Types Of Modeling: Categories go into subcategories on and on. It would not be time efficient to go into all of them here, online. Within fashion, there is high and junior, formal and casual, then all the specifics from a bridal gown to foundations, sportswear to pantyhose, uniforms and costumes, all the stops in between. If your height is under 5 ft. 8 in., it is unlikely you will attain significant high fashion modeling assignments. Fashion work, in general, can be print photography, encompassing still, video and film media, for ads and magazines, industrial videos, and television commercials . Runway is, of course, fashion shows where your stride and projection must always be exacting because it is, after all, live. Advertising illustration, for print, TV and other visual media, usually requires specific types, especially for television commercials and magazine ads. Who to "hit" with your promotions? Modeling agencies, theatrical agencies, casting directors and advertising agencies. You will find directories of all the major movers and shakers in NYC & LA right here, accessible from the main and subdirectories on this webpage! You can also post up to four promotional pictures here, too, free (see main directory). But first, read on and get important information about launching and conducting your modeling career.

Parts Modeling There is also a considerable market for "parts" models, models whose attributes are body part specific: hands, abs, legs, feet...you get the picture. Don't sell "parts modeling" short, it can be very lucrative. There is also story illustration for romance and crime magazines, paperbacks and tabloids. Keep in mind, television commercials, ad and story illustrations encompass acting as well as modeling and all modeling requires a certain mood setting personna. "Emote and express."

Parental Advisory For Child Models With the implementation of internet, the subject of child model promotion has become a matter of concern with the numerous "preteen model" promotional campaigns on websites. In general, most professional modeling agencies who specialize in child models select who they will represent by reviewing "hard copy" photo submissions and in-person interviews, rather than the web postings. As a rule, it is wise for parents who wish to place their children with modeling agencies do so only with recognized professional representatives established and respected in the commercial field, such as the Marge Mc Dermott Agency in New York (see the Professional Modeling Agency Directory above). Child modeling websites may place a minor in jeopardy of and in vulnerability to predatory hazards. The professional modeling community generally frowns upon models, child and adult, displayed on subscription websites. The same welfare guards that a parent puts in place for safety and protection of their children in the streets also applies to modeling endeavors and go-sees. On the internet, parents should always eye-monitor their child's online activities. Filtering software is a must but not a cure-all; Children's computers should be placed in a common household area, i.e. living room or kitchen, rather than the child's bedroom.

Get Your Balance! Did you know good posing posture in modeling begins with your legs, not your shoulders. You may have heard an old adage about "shoulders back, chest out," but the fact us, proper leg positioning and balance on your feet is more important. You will discover when you walk into the interview or casting call, the initial eye contact will be on your legs, your stance, as well as your face. So, start practicing good model stance. Wear, for example, leotards or swimsuit with your legs fully exposed before a full length mirror. Swing your right leg forward as if you were taking a step, bend your right knee and point both the toes of your right and left leg straight in front of you. ...OK, Now shoulders back and diaphragm out. Chin up and hold the balance steadily. Once you can keep a perfect, graceful balance for a minute, you have perfected your first professional modeling pose ("Modeling 101")!

Model Measurement Essentials: A model's complete body measurements are imperative statistics to a modeling agent. There are no "abouts" about it, they must be exact and, in the professional field, a lot more extensive than just "height/weight/bust-waist-hips. There are modeling industry specifics and protocols you must keep in mind. For an illustration of model measurements, click here. Know your true measurements at all times and be honest about them in your resume or statistic sheet. An agency will subsequently check them and even after you have been signed with an agent, expect to be measured over and over again periodically to ensure your current measurements are precise. It's imperative, especially in the fashion field.

Body & Skin Are The Model's Tools Treat your body and skin as a doctor treats his medical implements. They are your professional tools and your selling commodity. Avoid damaging your essential "tools" by doing things like eating "junk foods" and getting too much sun exposure (remember also tanning booths are not a healthy environment for your skin and have proved to pose a high risk of skin cancer). Take care of your teeth also with regular dental checkups, daily brushing and hygiene. Be wary of "teeth whitening" devices sold by mail order, they can damage tooth enamel. Keep your body fit and tone. Use skin care products judiciously as directed.
Click here for complete skin care information

The Commercial Release The model and person for whom the pictures, video, or film was produced are mutually protected under a commercial release which is mandated by federal law. The commercial release stipulates the model has agreed to pose for the production and agrees to give a specific party the right to use the images of her for commercial and/or exhibition purposes, usually perpetual. There are limited and unlimited commercial releases. A freelance photographer most often uses a "stock form" release; a national advertising agency may have a special commercial release drawn up by their attorney. As a model progresses in the field, she becomes more accustomed to commercial releases. It may be wise for a novice model to have a release read by her own attorney. Commercial releases usually stipulated how much a model is paid and if there are royalties (also referred to as "residuals"). Royalties are usually receivable from major television commercials and some national magazine print ads. To see two samples of limited and unlimited stock form commercial releases, click here. There are organizations who may assist in attaining an attorney who will provide counsel for complicated contracts and agreements, in some cases, without fee. For example, The Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts in New York City helps aspiring creative artists in legal matters.

Going To General (Not Specific Casting) Model Interviews If you are being interviewed for modeling representation in general, dress and appear like a professional. Unless the agency directs otherwise (always follow their guidelines to a "T"), wear an at the knee or just above the knee dress or skirt and blouse ensemble that compliments you. The neckline should be modest, but alluring. Don't overplay or underplay sex appeal, and never be garish. Avoid too much jewelry. Remember, the agency is buying you and your body, not the clothes or bangles you are wearing. Wear a mid-heel shoe and sheer, uncolored hosiery. Be sure your make-up is minimal and not ostentatious. Again, the agency is buying you, not your cosmetics. Be friendly, warm and gracious, even if some of the staff members are not. Answer all questions thoroughly, but also be concise. An interviewer needs specific information, but hasn't the time for your life story or, worse, any "sob story." Even if you are rejected, never let that change your being courteous and mannerly. You may need to see that same interviewer again either at the same agency or elsewhere, and at that future time you may be more fitting to the opportunity. Keep in mind, chances are, you will be rejected many times, over and over again, until and unless the anxiously anticipated acceptance arrives for you over the competition. Speaking of which, a model interview is not a beauty pageant; don't be "showy" or melodramatic. In other words, don't overdo it.

How Models Are Paid The modeling agency handles model's salaries and enacts procedures to ensure she is paid. A professional modeling agency or personal manager receives a per centage of the salary for representation and promotional provisions. Freelance models who are not signed to an agent are paid directly. Many major advertising agencies work on a 90 day accounts payable cycle. This means, a model's salary may not be received until three months after she has done the assignment. The same holds true for royalties. They are usually disbursed in 90 day cycles. Unions & Guilds: Certain model payments are governed by a union or guild. National television commercials are usually under the auspice of AFTRA, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Models and actors who do more than one or two television commercials (or other TV/video work) join this union guild. There are other unions also having jurisdiction in facets of the entertainment-communications industries and the creative arts. Required dues are considerable. An advertising agency may attain a union waiver for a model's first commercial. However, a union model always has the better chance of getting the job.

Final Notes Don't be misled by the dazzle, the glitter and the glamour, or by what a charlatan trying to get "promotion fees" in advance may tell you. Modelling, as well as acting or anything else in entertainment-communications, is extremely competitive, stressful and very hard work. You, as any other of the tens of thousands endeavoring the same, will have many more rejections than successes. You will feel often like you are being inspected under a microscope and, in essence, that is what the leading, professional modeling agencies are doing. They must.

If you truly have the qualifications, if you honestly have what it takes, if you have the genuine dedication and focus to endure and you run the race, go for it. Otherwise, don't set yourself up for a major disillusionment and, worse, heartbreak.

NINA BLACHARD'S COMMENTARY "Can you go to school to become a model? No. A girl either has the qualifications to start with or she doesn't. The big chain schools are franchised, and one or two of them may have good teachers who have been models and are knowledgeable. But, again, these schools exist on tuition. They're not going to tell you, 'You can't be a model,' or you won't take the course. There are the rip-off schools which do proliferate and make millions off the unwary. If a school promises that you can become a model if you take their course, stay away.. I do a lot of lecturing to high school groups and girls tell me that they are 'models,' because they have taken a course and have been graduated even though they may have none of the physical qualifications. Modeling is not like taking a nursing course, passing the course and being qualified to take the state exams. Girls don't have to have height and beauty qualifications to become nurses. These young girls who adamantly tell me they are models because they have been graduated from schools have been quite viciously taken. I spent two years doing radio shows, television shows, and being interviewed for articles, traveling across the country at my own expense to talk about the 'racket' schools, [. . .]. Please understand that a modeling school is not a requirement to become a model. If you have good potential, the top (and who wants to be with any other kind?) agencies will be interested in you."56

"Upfront fees are illegal." (from TiThe Consumer Guide to Modeling and Talent Agencies by New York City Consumer Affairs Extensive research has shown the common denominator in almost all modeling scams is upfront fees. Precedent lawsuits against modeling companies by federal and state government as well as individuals have invariably been filed against those which charged upfront fees.

Research into U.S. laws to protect consumers has shown almost every modeling agency law, regulation or rule ever enacted in America prohibits upfront fees.

One of the most recently enacted entertainment industry laws was drafted by a former child actress, who introduced the Advance-Fee Talent Services law. Sheila Kuehl did so at the request of Los Angeles City Attorney James Hahn, because his office had prosecuted modeling/talent scams cases in which "hundreds of parents paid millions of dollars in advance fees to frauds that promised that their children would become stars."

Attorney James Hahn explained scams thrived in the past because state "laws did not specifically address advance-fee talent services, thereby resulting in uninformed parents susceptible to illusory promises."

In the U.K., according to a published news report, "A proposed British law would make it illegal for a model or entertainment agency to charge people an upfront fee." Therefore the most simple test, the most important issue, and the first question to ask in determining whether or not a modeling company is legitimate is: Are there any upfront fees?

The Federal Trade Commission, which prosecutes bogus modeling and talent agencies warns: "Be suspicious if a company requires an upfront fee to serve as your agent."

The New York State Department of Consumer Affairs, which gives licenses to talent agencies, says: "Simply put, legitimate model and/or talent managers do not require or request upfront fees."

The New York State Consumer Protection Board issued a press release warning about one company which was charging upfront fees, saying, "Top modeling photographers won't charge clients for photo sessions until models get their first modeling paycheck." In other words, no upfront fees. The criticism leveled against the same company by Libby Stone, an industry professional and the president of a modeling guild, was: "What these people do is travel across the country, stay in fancy hotel rooms, advertise and get a bunch of people excited and take their money up front." The South Florida Business Journal reported the same criticism was made against the It International Talent agency's parent company: "They paid upfront fees to the agency's parent company, Models Direct, but did not get any work in return. It's a complaint heard about modeling agencies in general, both in Europe and the United States."

The BBB said: "Virtually all successful models and actors work through managers, and generally use a talent agency that does not charge a fee payable in advance for screen tests, photographs, acting or modeling lessons or other services. If you are signed as a client by a licensed talent agency, you will pay such agency nothing until you work and then a percentage of your earnings as a performer - - BUT NOTHING IN ADVANCE. Current California Labor law mandates that ONLY a licensed Talent Agent can book work for clients and charge a fee for that service. So, be cautious of companies that place "Help Wanted" ads for models or actors, which usually state "No Experience Necessary", and then ask for advance fees of any kind."

Yhe Screen Actors Guild, SAG, offers very similar advice for aspiring actors. In their FAQ, they asked, "What is the difference between a legitimate talent agency and one whose purpose is to separate you from your money?" Their answer: The legitimate talent agency does not charge a fee payable in advance for registering you, for resumes, for public relations services, for screen tests, for photographs, for acting lessons, or for many other services used to separate you from your money. If you are signed as a client by a legitimate talent agency, you will pay such agency nothing until you work and then 10 percent of your earnings as a performer — but nothing in advance.

Industry professionals echo the same views. Natasha Esch, as president of Wilhelmina, one of the top New York modeling agencies, wrote the following in her book, The Wilhelmina Guide to Modeling: The importance of securing legitimate and responsible representation cannot be emphasized enough. Agents who ask you for money up front -- whether it be for a photo session, composite, head sheet or any other promotional tool -- should be avoided. A reputable agent will not ask you for money until you are making money -- booking work as a result of the agency has made for you. That is the time to invest in a composite and in the agency book and head sheet. Even then you will probably not be asked for funds up front. These promotional expenses will be deducted from future paychecks.

Margaret Pelino, a booking agent at the Ford Modeling Agency in Manhattan, warns: "Be leery if an agency or individual asks for money up front."

Rhonda Hudson, President of The Models Guild in New York, said: "The really big red flag is when they start asking for money up front."

The American Guild of Variety Artists, AGVA, said: "Beware of agents demanding a fee before you can work. Never pay a fee in advance to any agent or manager."

Michael Harrah, Personal Manager and former Conference of Personal Managers Secretary, said: "If a personal manager asks for money up front -- run the other way!" Dott Burns, the late owner of the Dotts Burns Talent Agency, helped launch the careers of such famous women as Delta Burke and Marla Maple Trump. She ran her agency for 28 years in Florida and worked for more than 35 years in the industry. A few years before she died, in an article called "Breaking into Showbiz: Dott's Do's and Dont's," she said: "Don't ever pay 'up front' for an agent or a job. Never!"

Be Wise, Be Cautious If someone approaches you in a public place (i.e. shopping mall, restaurant, night club) and advises that you've been "discovered" or "you look perfect" for casting (such as a major movie, TV show, magazine), be extremely skeptical. This is most unlikely to be an approach from a professional. If you are invited to a dinner date, a party, our "out for a few drinks" rather than an office, be wary about accepting such an invitation. Why wouldn't the proposal be carried out in an office or studio? Be also cautious about invitations to public rehearsal halls. Anyone can rent a rehearsal room. If you believe someone is behaving in an inappropriate or predatory manner, report it to the police department in the area where such behavior occurred. This is also true of persons approaching parents of children in a public place with modeling and acting offers. These same cautions apply as well to anyone coming to your residence. Professional agents, artist managers and producers work out of offices or studios and do not make "house calls." If you have an online talent promotion on a website and are e-mailed or contacted, ask for the business address and phone number, then, check verify it with a trade directory such as this or a trade publication's annual directory. Consumer phone books do not differentiate between professional agents and producers and "talent sharks."

AN INTRODUCTION TO TV/FILM/STAGE ACTING & CASTING

As outlined in the Modeling Career Guide above, a career in professional acting is hard work and extremely competitive, as well as requiring much preparation before going to casting calls

The Essence & Basics Of Theatrics In acting, you will always be playing someone else, someone other than yourself, with a totally different personality and charisma. You may be typecast; that is, a secretary playing a secretary, but even the secretary you are portraying will not be you. You may, in real life, be a neat freak at your desk, the secretary you are playing may be one who believes cleaning her desk much less a priority than finishing tasks.

Theatrical Training Choosing an acting school is critical. Performing in local community plays is a good place to start, but when you hit "the big city," you will discover the criteria for an actor is much more stringent. This is where a professional acting school with coaches who thoroughly know the professional stage and screen arena as well as how to train actors for them is essential. In New York, the theatrical academies founded by acting director "greats" Lee Strassberg, Stella Addler and Uta Hagen are considered the pinnacle of acting instruction and discipline. They do not accept every student who applies and an audition or reading (from a stage play or film script) is usually required before a decision is made on acceptance. Augmenting this training with participation in Off-Broadway productions and student films (such as those under the auspice of major film making schools such as New York University), albeit the pay is little or none, provides a well rounded training ground.

Acting Methods There are numerous methods professional acting teachers use in their classes or private coaching. Improvisation, or "Improv" is a method wherein the actor performs a scene without a script, from inherent creativity and imagination. The Stravinski Method involves using imaginary props or replacing an animate (person) character with an inanimate object. For example the chair is my father. Susan Strassberg, noted actor and daughter of Lee Strassberg, emphasizes perfection of the character. Who is the character you are playing? What is her background? What is her psyche? What would she do in various situations? The Nolan Methodology is to (with actors over 18) practice acting with little or no clothing to release inhibitions as an inhibited actor is an impaired actor. Can you cry hysterically even though someone very close to you is not dying, but you are portraying someone whose love one is near death? Can you laugh hysterically when nothing strikes you funny? Can you act like a crazy person in an insane asylum isolation chamber, when you are very lucid. Can you act stupid, oversexed, or autistic even though you are not? Can you gurgle and crawl like a toddler on stage, as an adult, without feeling any sense of chagrin? An actor can be compared to a expensive music systems at an electronics center. The broader the spectrum of sound frequencies an audio component can produce, the better the unit is valued. Likewise, the more broad the spectrum of an actor's capabilities, the more valued the actor is to a motion picture, TV or stage producer and the casting director, as well as an agent.

Casting Calls Aside from the roles and types being sought for a particular production, casting notices also advise if the production is union (i.e. AFTRA/SAG) or non-union. If partial or total nudity is involved (for actors over 18), or enactment of strong violence, the casting notice will usually stipulate the requirement. You, as a potential actor being cast, have the right to know, in advance prior to auditioning, of any particular difficult enactments the production may demand. The usual protocol is fitting the role, physically and personna, and impressing the casting director and later the producer and director you have the capability to perform the role they way those who have written the script envisioned. The same holds true for a television or industrial commercial. Even accomplished "known" actors must convince those making the production that she or he "fits" and "can do it." After an open call, there is usually a callback, a second and perhaps even third audition which limits the candidates from the thousands who initially read for the part to the one who is given it. Pictures, resumes and handouts are a must, see information in the Modeling Career Guide ^above. An agent usually handles the contractual and monetary specifics; a freelance is best advise to consult an attorney who specializes in the entertainment-communications and creative arts industries.

Quick Tips For Casting Submissions That Get Results Here & Everywhere

The Do's & Don'ts:
1. Don't write overlong brag gabs. If your acting is good, you work will show it.
2. Don't write casting people with "I'm perfect for the part," That's their job to determine.
3. Don't refer to profiles on social sites (MySpace, Facebook, Linkedin, etc.).
4. Don't post multiple headshots that are virtually the same.
5. Include at least one full body shot in your composite or gallery.
6. Don't exaggerate a student film into a CBS prime time special. They know better/
7. Don't send pix two or more years old. You have to appear at the audition.
8. Don't fawn the project ("I'd just love to be in your great....") It comes off phony.
9. Do enter the title of the project for what you are submitting. Casting people aren't psychics
10. Do state a theatrical age range. No, it is not passe'. It helps.
11. Do state height (in stocking feet, not with lifts or high heels) and honest weight.
12. Do (sure it's o.k. to) briefly mention hobbies and interests. You never know.
13. Do make your cover letter friendly, but not obsequeous or seductive.
...and when you are asked to audition, dress to look the part or at least the essence of the screen/stage play. commercial, or modelling job.
REMEMBER: Legitimate Agents & Talent Managers Never Charge Fees In Advance For Representation

It is not only "unprofessional," in New York State it is against the law under consumer fraud. Legit agents receive commissions (usually between 10-30%) on jobs they attain for clients.. See Nina Blachard's column above

What does CI do with your talent profile submissions?
Every actor/model.performer's profile is important to us. They are reviewed, categorized for optimum reference and filed electronically with backup. For those casting submissions that best fit current casting at CI or producers/production companies whom we cast for, we place duplicates in this sector for reviews, closed call auditions and callbacks. Often, we learn of theatrical/model opportunities in the New York area not published in the trades. We refer to the overall casting file for possible candidates and forward them to the person in charge of casting or employment. If an interview is warranted, we notify the talent. So, every talent submission we receive is active for at least two years and you can update your file by sending new or additional photos or updated resume/stats at any time by
e-mail. We are not accepting postal mail submissions at this time, maybe again in the near future.
NEWS: CI may soon be posting general NYC area film, television and theater casting calls. Let us know if you'd like this feature added to our website and, sure, let us know of any other talent service you believe would be a good idea to begin (use contact us box or
e-mail. You are welcomed to use our online chat between 11AM and 11PM daily and Saturday, allow three minutes for someone to respond and please understand if we cannot get to you at a particular time, we are jammed with a lot of things going on at one time. Please try again later and return to carlsoninternational.com often for the latest buzz with us and the entertainment-communication world.

Why do some headshots get immediate attention from casting directors?
In the past forty something years, I've seen tens of thousands of headshots. Back when I started, it was hard copy 8x10's with resumes attached sent via snail mail (as we call postal mail now), now, of course it's e-mail jpg and text file attachments to e-mails (which most casting offices prefer) or so-called "comp cards" on the web, requiring an extra click or two (which most recipients really haven't the time for).

Method of delivery is not the issue. "As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be," the key to headshots or composites that work is one simple word: "PIZZAZZ!" Actor/Model/Singer/Dancer pix that jump out to the casting person's eyes, poses that are captivating, "the look" the glitz, the charisma that reaches out from the image. This applies to female, male, old and young, all ages, all types anybody.

We've received about 1500 submissions so far for "Star, Baby" alone. Most images say "handsome guy, pretty lady, ingenue, sensual, executive, mob or gang member," etc. etc. etc. All well and good, but at the major agencies, major studios, it takes a lot more to get more than an under 5, indie, off-broadway or showcase. Here's that word again. It takes "PIZZAZZ!" That's what make a cover girl a cover girl, even an Avatar an Avatar.

Three components form the seed that produces "the look." Projection, Participation, Photographer. Yes, right make-up, right lighting, right aperture setting and composition are all very important, but the "p's" are paramount. Most headshots are poses. Yawn. Great headshots are projection. Wow! It's what made Scavullo Scavullo, Avedon Avedon. These photogs knew how to get projection out of whomever they photographed. The person in front of the camera, however, must project. A photographer cannot make something out of nothing, although she/he can evoke it from a subject who can project. Participation is co-operation from behind and in front of the camera. Develop an image that is captivating and work with the photographer who captures it. The Photographer you select must know not only good photography techniques to capture and project your "sizzle." It's much more than f-stops and lens twisting. She/he must know the theatrical, modelling and advertising industries in New York. Using an inexpensive local photography studio in the suburbs, or a student photographer, is penny wise and pound foolish. It will cost you losing casting opportunities.

A lovely upstart actress recently chatted with me. She asked what I thought of her headshots. I said, as sensitively as I could, that while they showed she was a very pretty girl, they did not show her as outgoing, charismatic or photogenic and that was why, after she sent out a few hundred via e-mail, she received no response. I came to find out they were done by a "talent shark," the "for a fee in advance we will promote you" outfits. I told her rather than spend money on "training" from con artists, invest in a professional photo session and learn to project from an accredited acting academy like Strassberg, Weist-Baron, HB, and so forth. And I closed with "talk to the camera," "project" and go for "PIZAZZ!" and knock the eyes out of the casting people and agents.

JOHN'S BLOG

March 20, 2010

One of the questions we hear most often, of film/TV casting, is "why does casting take so long" and "why do they (producers/casting directors) run so many calls, callbacks for the same production or project?" The answer is very simple: closest match.

When a writer and her/his producer and director envision a screenplay, they see it visually in their minds and come to agreement exactly how each person in the role should look, sound and act, their traits, personality, the character's likely background and so forth. Sure, that's acting 101, but let's look at it from the casting side.

Especially in the current economic crunch, production expenses (even for a "low budget film:) are immense and the chances of coming out ahead like a roll of the dice, or less. The competition is enormous (in the 60's there were about seven television channels per market and no home entertainment media, there are now, today, hundreds of cable channels, tens of thousands of DVDs on the market and streams online. Vimeo alone has about a million). So a producer's aim must hit the bulls eye (with apologies to Entertainment Weekly.

"Avatar," "Precious" and the home made "Paranormal Activity" weren't smash hits by accident. Look at the cast. Note the pitch perfect performances. Notice even further how the audience can believe each character is real and that, no matter how surreal the fantasy, as in "Avatar," you believe whatever is taking place on the screen is real. Yes, it's good directing. But even more so, it's good casting and casting decisions were not made overnight.

One of the producers at CI told me a story about a film the company produced for a video distributor. One of the principal roles was that of a celebrity high fashion model. The casting director received a landslide of pictures and resumes in which many actors claimed to be 5' 7" or taller with extensive modelling experience. A closed call was held at a midtown audition studio. Most who walked in were 5' 4" and under and, while attractive, would not be a Ford protoge. It took three additional calls and two callbacks to find a lead that would be believable as a Christie Brinkley counterpart. And a lot of actors looked far different in person than the headshot represented.

So, when you look at the casting process as an actor from the other side, you can start to realize how intricate...and sometimes exasperating the job is.

That's all for now, more next time. JS
