Psychic Science Information Resources
The American Society for Psychical Research is the oldest psychical research organization in the United States. For more than a century, the ASPR has supported the scientific investigation of extraordinary or as yet unexplained phenomena that have been called psychic or paranormal. The ASPR was founded in 1885 by a distinguished group of scholars who shared the courage and vision to explore the uncharted realms of human consciousness, among them renowned Harvard psychologist and Professor of Philosophy, William James.
The ASPR headquarters is located in New York City in an historical landmark building acquired by the Society with the generous support of benefactors, including physicist-inventor of the Xerox, Chester Carlson. In addition to laboratories and offices, the ASPR maintains a one-of-a-kind library and archive. This international collection contains rare books, case reports, letters and manuscripts that date back to the 1700's.
A pioneering organization with an international membership, the ASPR serves as a global information network for public and professional audiences. Through its publications and educational services it provides responsible information about relevant contemporary and historical research.
The American Society for Psychical Research, first organized in 1885 with astronomer Simon Newcomb as president, later became a branch of the British Society for Psychical Research, founded in 1882, and functioned in Boston under the guidance of Richard Hodgson, formerly of Cambridge University, until his death in 1905. A newly-organized and independent ASPR was soon thereafter established in New York with James H. Hyslop, formerly Professor of Logic and Ethics at Columbia Unversity, as its secretary and treasurer. During the years between 1906 and his death in 1920, Professor Hyslop greatly expanded the scope of the Society's work. Publication of the Journal was initiated in 1907 and has continued uninterruptedly to the present.
The close relationship between psychic phenomena, clairvoyance, and important scientific and philosophical issues is evidenced by the fact that the investigation of such phenomena has enlisted the interest and active participation of a number of outstanding scientists and philosophers. Among the distinguished contributors of the past may be mentioned the physicists Sir William Barrett and Sir Oliver Lodge; the psychologists William James and Gardner Murphy, both of whom played major roles in the development of the ASPR. The contemporary scene in psychical research includes philosophers, psychologists and physicists, many of them on the faculty of distinguished universities
The Exceptional Human Experience Network, Inc. (EHEN) is an educational, research, and information resource organization studying all types of anomalous (out of the ordinary) experiences. Because these experiences are primarily subjective, scientists tend to ignore them. They do not fit into today's scientific theory, and our culture typically does not have a way to understand and deal with them. People who have these types of experiences are often not believed, or are considered odd or strange.
The Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), formerly the Division of Personality Studies , is a unit of the Department of Psychiatric Medicine at the University of Virginia. Utilizing scientific methods, we investigate apparent paranormal phenomena, especially:
Children Who Claim to Remember Previous Lives (reincarnation), Near-Death Experiences
Out of Body Experiences, Apparitions, those who are clairvoyant, and After-Death Communications, Deathbed Visions.
The Origin Of Psychic Readings
Historians differ on when the sciences of extra sensory psychic perception and astral projection
actually began. The beginnings can arguably be traced to the Babylonian culture, although some
make the case for the later Phonecian magi. The 4000BC Babylonians were known for star gazing.
They were fascinated by the cosmos, especially the lights in the night sky. Centuries later
Copernicus would turn this into science practice. The Phonecians, developing the Thebian
esoteric alphabet and accordingly, what is know the Tarot, practiced supernal mysticisms
as early as 2500 BC. The first recorded "reading," again arguably, is the Witch of Endor,
900BC. Judea's King Saul employs the service of "The Witch Of Endor" to contact the spirit of
a deceased Hebrew prophet. The Old Testament Bible affirms the "seance" is successful "by God's will."
Prophecy in itself is psychic oriented. How else could God have contacted the prophets of the Bible?
In the New Testament, John the Baptist foretells the coming of the Christ, the three
Egyptian Magi are guided by a star, the Spirit of God tells Mary she is to give Virgin
Birth, and, in the Book of Acts, the Disciples acknowledge the psychic abilities of a
slave woman whose abilities are exploited.
In the Gnostics (Extrabiblical writings of the same authors of Bible Scriptires), Miriam is
said to have been gifted with psychic abilities. She correctly envisioned and foretold of
many events. Egyptian Shebas, many Temple Magi (Priestesses), exhibited supernal abilities
in telepathy and astralkinesis, documented in archived hieroglyphics. The 1st century BC
Celtic women, mystics, mesmerized their male counterparts with their supernatural abilities.
This became the basis for Wicca as we know it today in the New Age.
There are many psychic organizations and services throughout the world today. Most are
dedicated to the psychical sciences and provide services with integrity and sincere interest.
There are those which do not because of profit motives. As a seeker of psychic services, you
are also a consumer. Consumer precautions apply. Choose psychic services and information
providers carefully and be very cautious about providing personal information, especially
specific residence address, phone numbers and financial information. We will
never ask you for this type of data.
