THE BODY POWER OF
VITAMINS, MINERALS & OTHER NUTRITION SUPPLEMENTS:

Alphabetically Within Categorical Groups

VITAMIN A (Retinal, also sometimes spelled Retinyl) Vitamin A is an antioxidant which maintains body skin and tissue health. Deficiency in Vitamin A may result in diminished skin texture, tone and dermal lesions. Vitamin A also aids in maintaining eye health and vision lucidity, especially night vision. Good sources of Vitamin A include green vegetable, yellow/red fruits and vegetables, especially carrots. Vitamin A is fat soluble.

VITAMIN B COMPLEX (B1=Thiamin, B2=Riboflavin, B6=Pyridoxine, B12=Cyanocobalamin) B Vitamins, coenzymes in carbohydrate, protein and amino acid metabolisms, provide nutrition to organs, especially the heart, essential for maintaining cardio-vascular health, especially for "working out." Vitamin B also aids in overall systemic protection of the vital organs. Deficiency in B Vitamin regiments may cause impairment of the nervous system and digestive tract. Good B Sources: B1-pork, grain, liver, squash; B2-liver, milk, cheese, egg, mushroom, broccoli; B6-cereal, meat, liver, fruit, leafy vegetables; B12-meat, dairy products. The B Vitamins are water soluble.

VITAMIN C (Ascorbic Acid): Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant which greatly boosts the body's immune system. Many doctors prescribe mega doses of Vitamin C for people prone to Urinary Tract Infections. Vitamin C also helps balance cholesterol levels and aids in preventing high blood pressure when used with a low salt diet. Vitamin C also boosts the collagen level in the body which supports healthy ligaments. Good sources for Vitamin C include citrus fruits (especially oranges), potatoes and green leafy vegetables. Vitamin C is water soluble. Ester-C supplements are gentler to the body's digestive system, in comparison to the traditional Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C supplements.

VITAMIN D (Cholecarciferol) Vitamin D absorbs calcium to maintain good bone health. Vitamin D aids in preventing conditions such as osteoporosis and brittle bones. Vitamin D also promotes good musculature and body tone. Good sources of Vitamin D include whole milk, fish and liver. Vitamin D is fat soluble.

VITAMIN E (Tocopherol) Vitamin E is an antioxidant which helps maintain an oxygen supply to the heart thereby protecting against cell and tissue deficiencies. Vitamin E promotes expedient wound healing and boosts blood clotting factors. Good sources of Vitamin E include vegetable oil, grain and egg yolk. Vitamin E is fat soluble. Supplements in the more digestible Ester form are starting to appear on the naturopathic pharmeceutical market

VITAMIN K (Phytomenadione) Vitamin K also aids in maintaining proper blood clotting factor. Much is yet to be researched in terms of Vitamin K nutrition. Good sources of Vitamin K include green leafy vegetables and liver. Vitamin K is fat soluble.

NIACIN (VITAMIN B3) is a vitamin coenzyme for energizing metabolic effectiveness and aids in "burning off" fat calories. Good sources for Niacin include meat, fish, grain, mushrooms. Niacin is water soluble.

NICKEL is a trace mineral that functions as an enzyme in the body and assists in chemistry balance; it is found in nuts, chocolate and dried beans.

FOLIC ACID Folacin aids in the essential function of cell division, the body's ability to build red blood cells and aids in preventing anemia. Good sources for Folic Acid includes liver, grain, green vegetables (esp. broccoli, mushrooms and legumes. It is inert in spinach leaves, but lost in the cooking of spinach.

MAGNESIUM is a mineral essential for a broad spectrum of the body's metabolic functions and health, including proper glucose levels, glandular wellness and muscular-skeletal nourishment. The body loses mass quantities of magnesium through bowel movement. Fortunately, magnesium is found in most of the primary food chains (dairy, grain, fruits and vegetables) Large amounts of Magnesium (above RDA) may have a laxitive effect. Women in pregnancy require a higher daily adult requirement of magnesium.

MANGANESE is a mineral that controls fatty deposits in the body, boosts metabolic efficiency and connective tissue wellness; it is found in whole grain foods avacado, leafy vegetables, tea, ginger, cloves and most fruits.

MOLYBDENUM is an enzyme which reduces uric acid in the body system and is helpful in reducing gout inflammation; it is found in buckwheat, wheat germ, dark leafy vegetables, soybean, liver, oats and barley.

PANTOTHENIC ACID is a metabolic coenzyme found in yeast, liver and eggs. In synthesis with other nutrients, Pantothenic Acid boosts energy and body "power" efficiency.

PHOSPHORUS is a protein building, ph balancing mineral found in dairy products, meat and poultry.

POTASSIUM is an ion element is essential in neurological well being, boosting the "electronics" of the human body; it is abdundant in virtually all fresh foods.

BIOTIN is a carbohydrate coenzyme which aids in skin (dermal cell and tissue) health. Biotin helps the body rid itself of necrotic (dead) skin cell tissue. Sources of Biotin include liver, yeast, grain and nuts.

BORON is classified as an "ultratrace" mineral that is necessary for cell growth and bone strength, essential in prevention of osteoperosis because it increases the absorption of cakcium in the body. Food sources are fruits, vegetables, nuts, wine and cider.

CARNITINE is a molecular element similar to Vitamin B1, but not in itself a vitamin; it aids the body in "burning off" fat and trace elements can be found in milk and eggs.

GLUCOSAMINE is a herbal derivative popularly accepted to be a mild naturopathic anti-inflammatory. It is becoming popular because of lesser gastric side effect to NSAIDs in relieving the pain and stiffness of minor arthritic conditions. Users found that Glucosamine, when taken as a daily dosage regimen, diminishes joint paint associated with rheumatoid, psoriatic and gouty arthritis. These findings have not yet been concurred by the U.S. Food and Drug administration.

BETA CAROTENE is a vegetable derivative which acts as an anti-oxidant in the body, promoting healthy tissue in the hair and skin. It has been found helpful in boosting the body's immune system against infections and, possibly, cancer. Beta Carotene is best found in fruits and vegetables.

COPPER is the mineral boosts protein in the body and more recently has been found beneficial, in conjunction with iron supplementation, for treating Celiac Sprue autoimmune disorder. Copper is found in liver, nuts and certain beef organ.

SELENIUM is a mineral antioxidant which guards against the formation of free radicals in the body's system that impairs cardio-vascular function. Selenium, in multi-vitamin formulas, works in tandem with Vitamin E.

SILICON is, medically speaking, a macrobiological mineral being researched as an aid in fibrous tissue health and is being studied as a possible therapeutic for Alzheimer's; it is contained in alfalfa, whole grains, brown rice, bell peppers and dark leafy vegetables.

SODIUM is the best recognized mineral having electrolytic properties which governs how much water is retained in the body; thus too much sodium (salt) exacerbates edema (swelling), especially of the lower extremity; the appropriate amount of sodium in the body regulates the flow of elecctrolytes needed in cell function.

SULFUR is a mineral which promotes energy and plays a role also in blood clotting; it is found in egg yolk, garlic, onion, poultry and sea food.

IRON (Ferrous) is an essential component in hemoglobin. When the body is efficient in iron, especially over a period of time, this will likely result in anemia. Anemia, in turn, leads to serious kidney ailments. Iron is found in liver, eggs, red meat and leafy vegetables..

VANADIUM is a trace mineral a 1974 study found to be an aid in reduction of the "bad" cholesterol and found in shellfish, black pepper, mushroom, dill seed, parsley and soy.

ZINC is a cofactor in the body's metabolism associated with organic healing, sexual potency and overall body function. Meat, shellfish, legumes, whole milk and whole grain are good sources of Zinc.

CALCIUM is essential in maintaining the health and strength of bones and teeth. Calcium deficiency, in women, even young girls, may lead to permanent osteoporosis starting at middle age. Calcium is found abundantly in whole milk, sardines and citrus fruits.

CHOLINE is categoriZed by medical science as a quasi-vitamin; the trace element is beneficial to brain cells and is found in egg yolk, legumes and liver. Certain seizure medications such as phenobarbitol and cancer drug metholtrexate reduce choline absorption.

CHROMIUM aids the body in producing insulin. Ensuring sufficient chromium intake may help in reducing the risk of diabetes. Good sources of Chromium include yellow cheese, black pepper, grain and nuts.

FLOURIDE is well known as the mineral (esp. in toothpaste) in promoting dental health and is in fish foot eaten with bone intact, i.e. salmon, kipper and sardines.

INOSTISOL is a molecular nutrient that is significant in hair growth and is found in green, leafy vegetables, lecithen, brewer's yeast and mushrooms.

ALPHA LIPOIC ACID is a wide latitude antioxidant, a phyto-nutrient, which provides a full spectrum of defense against cell depreciation and boosts the effectiveness of other anti-oxidants in a multi-vitamin formula.

L-CYSTEINE is a non-essential amino acid that is an important component of hair, nails and the keratin of the skin. L-Cysteine stabilizes protein structure and aids in the formation of collagen, thereby promoting healthy skin, hair and nail textures.

LINOLEIC ACID is classified as a macronutrient which aids in proper body chemistry and found in fish oils (see Omega-3 Fatty Acids).

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS (EFA'S) are usually derived from fish oil and, not synthesized by the human body, it is demonstrated that taking Omega-3 supplements may lower cholesterol, thereby supporting cardiac wellness

OMEGA-6, OMEGA-9 FATTY ACIDS Some studies, while not conclusive, demonstrate these sea derived oils may inhibit inflammation and assist the body's immune system.

TAURINE is an animo acid which assists tissue growth and it is abundant is shell fish.

What Antioxidants Do For You Antioxidants help rid your body system of toxins and contaminants which lead to urinary tract, respiratory, skin and other infections. Citrus fruits are an excellent source of natural antioxidants element.

Choosing & Using Herbal Formularies Wisely You have often seen the disclaimer associated with the sale of herbal formulas reading "this product has not been evaluated by the (U.S.) Food & Drug Administration and it is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any disease." Herbs do not, in general, come under the regulation of the FDA. The debate about "natural cures v. pharmaceutical conspiracy" blazes on, both in research clinics and TV infomercials (see below). First and foremost, always consult your doctor or healthcare provider before taking any herb, especially if you are taking a prescription medicine. For example, Flaxseed Oil (Omega-3) should not be taken if you are take aspirin daily or a blood thinner such as Coumadin (Warfarin) without asking your doctor first. Flaxseed has been shown in studies to inhibited blood clotting factors. Use with blood thinning medications may pose a bleeding risk. Another example: taking Valerian, Chamomile, or Passion Flower while at the same time using normal doses of prescription sleep aids such as Ambien or Lunestra may present the danger of sleep medication overdose and possibly have fatal results. Herbs which act as an anti-inflammatory may have the same side effect as taking aspirin or NSAIDS's, possibly causing stomach bleeding. Therefore, use herbal remedies prudently. While they are naturopathic in pure form, the products sold in health food stores may be processed in such a way as to introduce allergens (Gluten, for example, a wheat, barley or rye protein which is hazardous to persons with Celiac-Sprue autoimmune disorder). Gluten and Casein which may be used as binders in herbal formulas can cause allergic reactions. Casein (or, Caseinate) is another consideration. While Casein is not categorized as lactose in itself, it does contain certain milk proteins and may produce a "trigger reaction" in those who are lactose intolerant. This is also true of Acidophilus probiotic. Therefore, consider no herbal product "100% safe" even if it is advertised as "100& natural." Never take a higher dose of a herbal product than is directed on the label. Use a herbal remedy as you would an over the counter medicine. Remember also, since the manufacture of herbal products are not regulated, quality varies widely. Research. Check which lab manufactures the product you buy. Even a major health food chain may inadvertently carry a herbal product that made with poor quality control. You will find additional information and a healthline-TV consumer alert in the discourses below.
The Health Benefits Of Garlic Since 1858 garlic has also been known for its anti-bacterial properties. At this time Louis Pasteur discovered that bacterial cells died when they were saturated with garlic. Other cases of it being used as an antibiotic in history include WW II, when British doctors used it to treat those wounded in battle, and Albert Schweitzer used garlic to treat typhus and cholera. Garlic is known to have not only antibacterial but antiviral and antifungal abilities as well. It is effective against intestinal parasites, recurrent yeast infections and the growth candida albicans is slowed by garlic. Garlic has also demonstrated to reduce hypertension and thereby contributing to heart attack prevention.

Healthline-TV: Herbal Product Consumer Alert

Herbal Medication Dangers from KRCRTV on Vimeo.

Healthline-TV: The Truth About Viagra & Levitra

How Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis Work from LOVEANDHEALTH on Vimeo.
>HOW TRUE ARE THE ALLEGATIONS OF
CORPORATE PHARMACEUTICAL POLITICAL BRIBES
AND COVER-UPS OF KNOWN, UNREPORTED PRESCRIPTION DANGERS?

Television infomercials are abound which describe (and promote) books by internal medicine specialist, Dr. James Chappell and medical researcher, Kevin Trudeau, as well as herbal products claimed to be natural cures for any number of ailments. The authors of the books contend that the AMA and pharmaceutical interests ("cartels") suppress naturopathic healing for such major diseases as cancer, diabetes, arthritis and multiple sclerosis. The writers claim this is to protect the interests of pharmaceutical corporations who must turn profits for their shareholders. The general public ponders how true are these allegations and how well do naturopathic, herbal remedies actually work. So have we.

Here are our findings:
FACT: The major pharmaceutical companies are publically held conglomerates who are legally obligated to maintain a substantial profit revenue for their shareholders.

FACT: The major pharmaceutical companies have the strongest clout in Washington than any other conglomerate because they contribute the most money to presidential elections, both republican and democrat. This being so, the pharmaceutical companies are the sacred cows of the U.S. government's Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

FACT: With FDA blessing and protection, the major pharmaceutical companies are supported by the AMA (American Medical Association) and insurance companies which dictate that they will not cover patient treatment unless a.) the condition is categorized under a "disease" or "ailment" having a particular insurance industry code and b.) the "disease" or "ailment" is treated with a prescription drug (medication).

FACT While Western medicine by and large rejects natural herbal medicine as practiced for centuries in Asia and India, as well as Native Americans, they never literally disputed the therapy of the ancients cured the so-called "diseases" and "ailments" in their homeland. What the FDA actually states, albeit in ambiguity, is that advertising claims for naturopathic "medicines" do not correspond with their guidelines.

FACT While the FDA insists the pharmaceutical drugs are therapy in truth, they have reluctantly admitted to the benefits of Ester-C Vitamin over pharmaceutical Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C, Lutein and Lycoprene which are now added to pharmaceutical daily supplements, i.e. Chromagen FA, a prescription formula for certain types of anemia.

For many thousands of years, what the medical profession categorizes as "diseases" and "ailments" have been cured by naturopathic, herbal remedies in China, India, Polynesian and South Pacific Island nations. There are no pharmaceutical political lobbies in those nations

At Xoteria, we believe traditional Western medicine and naturopathic, herbal medicine of the ancients can work hand in hand to cure major illnesses in America is the political and profit motive interests and side-stepped. The wellness products, which are sold as an ailment prevention methodology should work hand in hand with your health provider to promote erllnrdd. Herbal products sold by thousands of natural therapeutics providers across the country, including the General Nutrition Center chain and even CVS. What they and we do claim is that using naturopathic Herbal Therapeutics in tandem with health evaluations by a physician promotes well-being with minimal "chemicals." The FDA does not support this nor do they evaluate herbal, naturopathic remedies.

Consider that the United States has the highest cancer rate in the world, the highest diabetic rate in the world, the highest cardiac deficiency rate in the world in terms of affected persons.

Xoteria interviewed several traditional medicine physicians. We asked one prominent gastro-intestinal specialists about the herbal remedy, Acidophilus, a naturopathic, homeopathic remedy for intestinal health, found in health yogurts such as national brands Columbo, Danon, Stoneyfarms, Yoplait, which create "good bacteria" (Flora) to counteract bad intestinal bacteria. His first answer was "a waste of money." When we asked if the methodology has any merit, he hesitated, then said, "Well, somewhat." We pressed and asked, "So why, then, would it be 'a waste of money?'" The specialists admitted finally, "Well, sure, if it helps digestion...use it."

We asked another prominent hospital house doctor about Coral Calcium, for which we even had doubts; not the Calcium aspect because that certainly is a vital supplement for the body, but the value of Japan's "Coral" origination. We wondered why Japan reef Calcium was any better than Calcium from any other source. The doctor explained, "Purity is an aspect in anything we ingest. The bottom line is, if it works, it works."

The herbs you have seen listed here are those which have, over time, since as far back as 4000 BC, have proved their worth. Western medicine is in infancy compared to naturopathic remedies. Naturopathic herbal remedies target the body's malady. Legally, we must again state the USDA does not affirm this.

K44p in mind that as the FDA does not set standards for herbal supplements and products. quality control and content of allergins (i.e. casseinates, fructose, gluten, HVP, lactose, nut, starch, sucrose, wheat) varies. Therapeutic products products by Freeda, Nature's Source and Vitamin Power are, according to the manufacturer, allergen free.

NATUROPATHIC HEART ATTACK PREVENTATIVE: Increased Intakes of Omega-3 Fatty Acids EPA, DPA, and DHA May Protect Men Against Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)...

The heart health benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids are well- documented, being first reported in the early 1970s in The Lancet and The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. To date, the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been linked to improvements in blood lipid levels, a reduced tendency of thrombosis, blood pressure and heart rate improvements, and improved vascular function.

A new study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, reported that increased intakes of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) may reduce the risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), an all-inclusive term for a range of symptoms including unstable angina and chest pains.

The Danish Diet, Cancer and Health cohort study involved 57,053 men and women. During an average follow-up time of almost eight years, 1,150 people developed ACS. Men who consumed more than 0.39 grams of PUFAs per day had an associated risk of ACS 27 per cent lower than men who consumed less than 0.39 grams per day. "We found borderline significant negative associations between the intake of marine omega-3 PUFA and ACS among healthy men," they concluded.

Earlier this year, a review concluded that the science behind the cardiovascular health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids supports recommended daily levels of 500 mg or more.

Compelling evidence from studies involving almost 40,000 participants supports daily EPA plus DHA intakes of at least 500 mg per day for healthy individuals, while people with known heart disease or heart failure should aim for up to 1,000 mg daily, according to a review published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Healthline-TV: What Women Say Is Wrong With Medical Care

Fixing Health Care: What Women Want from American Academy of Family Physi on Vimeo. ARE THE DRUG COMPANIES KILLING OUR CHILDREN?

Elemental allergy auto immune disorders are increasing among children at an alarming rate, as well as the entire population. Celiac (intestinal allergy to wheat, barley rye and all protein derivatives or cross-contaminants), Lactose Intolerance (digestive allergy to milk and most dairy products), Autism (with many protein related allergies) are just to name a few. When parents contact representatives at the pharmaceutical companies who manufacture prescription and over the counter drugs, they are shocked to discover these multi billion dollar firms would not commit to making or declaring their pills, capsules, powders and other ingested formulae allergy free. Cipro, one of the most prescribed wide lattitude antibiotics manufactured by Bayer (yes, the aspirin people), contains gluten which triggers severe gastro-intestinal side effects, and damage to the small intestine. They are obstinate about removing gluten from Cipro. Ironically, the generic Ciproflaxin does not contain allergins or cross contaminants. Ambien, the popular sedative, contains allergins through cross contamination. So prominent are allergins in prescruption and over the counter medications, one Celiac organization developed pdf software to keep track of what medicines someone with an allergy may take with reasonable, not positive, safety. Why not positive safety? Because the drug companies change their sources of protein binders at market value to save money, as if they are not charging tantamount for medications. One lot may contain a corn starch binder, another lot wheat elemented starch (hydrogenated vegetable protein, or HVP). CBS News reported how a two year old girl nearly died from her Sprue allergy, until one doctor finalle performed the essential diagnostic (biopsy of the villi). The medicines she was taking, (along with the McDonald's fast food treats (their french fries are loaded with allergins), were killing her.

Another case on network news was a six year old autistic boy. Many inert ingredients trigger severe side effects in autism. Yet, the pharmaceutical companies refuse to spend the few extra dollars to make prescription and over the counter medicine allergy free. Wellness author Clan Thompson, in his research, noted that the drug companies were not only insensitive to the issue of allergins in prescription and over the counter medications, but would give little information over and above a simple statement of already known facts. This was also the case when we e-mailed several. When we also e-mailed the largest food companies, General Foods, General Mills and Kraft, they, too refused to respond by e-mail (in other words, in print). All three simply said, in essence, "read the labels, because ingredients fluctuate." As with pharmaceuticals, a food item may use corn starch in one batch, wheat starch in another; pure vegetablee oil in one lot, hydrogenated vegatable protein (which has allergins) in another. Some products have even added allergins, such as gluten, more recently to improve the taste of their product (sales may have been down 1% and who wants to get fired from a cushy job?).

The concern over allergy sufferers, even children who could become fatally ill, seems to be of little concern among the food, drug, and eatery chain conglomerates. Mass marketing and money is tatamount. A snicker is behind the smile of the fast food company's clown That is not our retort, it came from a major advertising agency executive.

Protecting Aginst Swine Flu, Strep, E-Coli & Other Viral Outbreaks:WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY. As alarmed as people are, few follow this essential rule for bacterial protection. Aside from the obvious (washing hands after using the toilet and before eating), hand washing is necessary several times a day because most infections arise from touching door knobs and handles, safety bars and straps in public transportation coaches, various utilities, computer keys and controls on devices. Hand washing, using a hand sanitizer suck as Purell, combined with good total body hygiene and good nutrition, is the best defense against any viral/bacterial strain. Overuse of antibiotics decreases effectiveness and actually impairs the body's own immune system.

Children in school are, of course, very susceptible to viral and bacterial infection. Frequent hand washing and using a carry along hand sanitizer must be impressed upon them. Day Care Centers and providers must never allow toddlers to go barefoot. Ensure that day care personnel are also stressing good hygiene habits, especially when using the lavatory. Teenagers, who hand portable devices (cell phones, ipods, e.g.) must be made aware the keypads on these dvices carry bacterial deposits from skin tissue on fingers. Parents should ensure schools follow new sanitizing standards.

THE ROOTS OF NATUROPATHIC HERBAL MEDICINE
THE TRUTH OF TIME

The question on everyone's mind concerning health these days is whether naturopathic medicine preventatives, based on herbal therapeutics, can promote health and longevity less the harsher prescription drugs with their side effects.. The fact is, the therapeutic value of natural earth herbs has been proven since time began. There were no pharmaceutical companies back in the days of Abraham or Moses. In those days, tribes used herbs from the ground for health and cures. The 600 BC Greek physicians, who were actually magi, began to combine herbs in therapeutic formulas. Even in times of Jesus, the first century AD, there were yet no pharmaceutical companies. The ancestral Native Americans cured many diseases exclusively with herbal remedies.

The most popular herbal root used by the ancients was the Yukka plant. It was utilized as an anti-inflammatory for arthritis and most other types of joint pain. Yukka never had questionable health hazards like the recent Vioxx scandal or the intestinal duress side effects of most NSAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs). Used for centuries and today, naturopathic health stores sell Yukka in capsule form. Many believe the Yukka root herbal derivative is still the best anti inflammatory remedy, regardless of the many prescription drugs that are aggressively promoted to doctors.

The roots of Valerian, Chamomile and Passion Flower were the relaxation and sleep aids of 1500BC Hindi people and was quite popular with the Greeks almost a thousand years later. Tea made from these roots are now popular in health food stores. As women do today, ancient Shebas (the affluent princesses) of Egypt extensively applied Chamomile as a skin astringent and conditioning beauty aid.

900 BC Babylonian and Egyptian magi and Minoans reveled in St. John's Wort. They believed this potent herb sharpened their mind power to the point of what we now refer to as ESP, extra sensory perception. St. John's Wort is considered by some naturopathic therapists as an aid in maintaining mental acuity and warding off Alzheimer's Disease. The mainstream medical community strongly refutes this and the AMA has issued a warning that St. John's Wort may cause renal (kidney) failure.

The most recommended cerebral herbal therapeutics come to us from Asia. Ginseng and Gingko Biloba have shown to be more likely the herbal remedy for mental alertness without side effects or "bouncing off the walls"). Gingko Biloba improves circulation to the brain, naturopathic experts say, because of the Terpene Lactotes element is the root's leaves. Ginseng promotes mind power through it's ginsenoside and eleutherocide properties

An interesting trend in naturopathic medicine today is the Green Tea leaf root. which naturopathy researches report, aids in women's breast health and development. Two studies maintained that 1)in a group of 100 prepubescent girls (aged 9 to 12) given 30mg of decaffeinated Green Tea Extract (Camellia Sinesis) daily with 1000mg Flaxseed Oil (see below), 82% of the participants developed, in their teenage years, firmer breasts than 93% of the same aged, same number of clinic participants who took only a daily vitamin supplement; 2)in another study of a group of 300 women, aged 18 to 35, 79% of those participants taking 50mg. of Green Tea extract daily maintained breast elasticity and improved form over a eight year period of time. This "body boosting power" is attributed to the botanical herb's rich polyphenol properties which is a potent "nature growth hormone" element. Green Tea/Flaxseed Formula combined with Collagen-Elastin Applique Breast Enhancement Therapeutic.
Green Tea Leaf, as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, also diminishes the crystal like formations within joints, which is the major affliction of arthritis.

Flaxseed Oil is another naturopathic derivative rich in Omega-3, has been shown to also promote breast health for women and may protect against breast cancer. Flasseed has shown in some studies to have anti-viral properties. Please see cautions about using these products and interactions above.

Healthline-TV: Lowering Cholesterol In The Body

A Diet To Lower Cholesterol Is Essential To Your Health & Well Being from Delynda Lardone on Vimeo.

HERBAL NATURAL REMEDIES THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT

Flax Seed Oil has been shown to alleviate menopausal symptoms. The ancient Greek physicians declared Flax to be an all-immune health agent for growing girls and women of all ages.
From the French maritime, the Pine Bark extract is considered a powerful antioxidant containing proanthcyandins which boosts the body's immunity to free radicals, strengthening blood vessels and thereby promoting heart health.
From Africa, the Buchu Leaf, Uva Ursi. and Juniper Berry have proven to be the naturopathic diuretic on a regular daily intake. Unlike prescription Lasix, these herbs do not affect blood pressure levels. People having only mild edema (water swelling) gradually substituted a naturopathic diuretic formula of Buchu, Uva Ursi and Juniper daily. The herbal diuretic is available at most health food stores and GNC
Sea Weed has been shown, in some studies not conclusive, but demonstrative, to boost the body's immunity to cancer, diabetes and arthritis. This does not mean it will prevent, treat or cure this diseases, but aid the body system to defend itself against them. The proponents of Sea Weed therapeutic products take the stand that "since Sea Weed accounts for a major part of the earth's oxygen levels, it is therefore a vital element in the health of the human body." (quote from a Sea Weed therapy TV infomercial). Some naturopathic therapists have voiced concern about contamination, iodine and mercury levels in the Sea Weed therapeutics.
Lutein has, more recently, been accepted by the major manufacturers of mainstream vitamin supplements as a benefit to ocular health. Lutein is included in many over the counter formulas including Centra Vite. Lutein has also been accepted by the optometrist groups as an immune agent which may prevent macula degeneration, a major cause of blindness in the elderly. With the new AMA acceptance of Lutein, Ester-C and Lycoprene (a tomato root extract which boosts cardio-vascular circulation).
Onion aroma may put an end to insomnia, so simple, it is certainly worth a try in place of using drugs like Ambien and Lunestra. Place one or two sliced onions in a bowl and place the bowl on a table next to your bed.
Certain pure nuts, such as Almonds and Walnuts, contain salicylites, the base ingredient of aspirin, naproxen and indocin (indomethacin). The "nut" is less likely to upset your stomach, so try one the next time you have a minor headache, arthritis or muscular pain. The salicylites in the almont and walnut act has the same anti-inflammatory properties as the otc pain reducer you may be taking. Chickweed herb root (add to tea) also is a natural anti-inflammatory as is Feverview root.
Asparagus and Kale are natural kidney health aids. A diet which includes these foods on at least a thrice weekly diet may reduce the chance of kidney stones forming.
Mustard and Clove Spice can relieve intestinal gas and indigestion.
Garlic is a gentler way of reducing blood pressure (we aren't sure about it killing vampires).
Bee Pollen is a good alternative to Viagra in male potency. Cinnamon and pure Dark Chocolate combination is the sexual stimulant for the woman.
Eggs and Whole Milk with a few drops of Castor Oil whipped to a creamy texture may eliminate any thought about getting botox treatments. Massaged into the face, wrapped with a towel covering for about five minutes, then removed by a massage with pure Glycerine, before washed off with Cocoa Butter soap and water may provide the facial "lift" (diminished lines and coarseness) you have been looking for to "take some years off" face and legs, as well.
Sea Salt has been noted to alleviate the scaling and itch of psoriasis. After the mixture of 25% Sea Salt to 75% purified water is applied to affectated psoriatic areas, apply petroleum gel or aloe vera to keep the skin supple. Bathing with Kelp added to the bath water also relieves skin irritations. Hibiscus is also known to reduce itching.
Olives have natural antifungal properties, a good immune defense.
Gargling with Apple Cider, and using is as a mouth rinse also, may have more benefits than the national brand mouthwash products in relieving dry or "scratchy" throats.
Everyone knows Peppermint soothes indigestion, but it also acts as a calmative, as does Raspberry.
Tea made with Honey and Anise may help those with respiratory problems such as asthma or emphysema. Thyme loosens phlegm and has antiseptic properties.
Honeycomb is a natural antihistamine, without the drowsy side effect.
Sage Leaf herb root provides relief to the pain of muscle sprains.
About Drinking Herbal Tea Drinking tea, some studies show, seems to have anticancer effects in many people. Green tea contains a polyphenol known as epigallocatechin gallate, which in animal tests has been shown to prevent the formation of tumors by acting on a number of different mechanisms. Other studies have shown that black tea also may have antitumor activities throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Researchers found significantly decreased rates of cancers of the esophagus, throat, mouth, stomach, and rectum in people who drank up to four cups a day of tea. A study published last year in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that people who drank one to two cups of tea a day were 46% less likely to develop severe coronary artery blockages. The risk of having severe atherosclerosis was 69% lower in those who drank four cups of tea a day. The protective benefit of tea was "most pronounced" among women, Black tea contains fairly high levels of flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties.

Soy & Women's Breast Health Increased intakes of soy and soy products may reduce the risk of death and breast cancer recurrence, reports a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Women with the highest intake of soy protein had a 29 per cent lower risk of death, and a 32 per cent lower risk of breast cancer recurrence compared to patients with the lowest intake of soy protein, according to findings from a study with breast cancer survivors from China.

The study adds to an ever-growing body of science supporting the role of soy, and the naturally-occurring isoflavones it contains, with improved breast health. Soy isoflavones are naturally occurring oestrogen-like compounds. Protein-based nutritional supplements are now being recommended as way of reducing symptoms of menopause and an alternative to hormone replacement therapy.

Conflicting reports however question the beneficial effects of soy isoflavones... Some studies indicate that breast cancer cells in laboratory mice were stimulated by the isoflavones. However, population studies have shown that women with a high-soy diet generally have lower rates of breast cancer.

"Soy foods are naturally rich in isoflavones, a major group of phytoestrogens that have been hypothesized to reduce the risk of breast cancer. However, the oestrogen-like effect of isoflavones and the potential interaction between isoflavones and tamoxifen have led to concern about soy food consumption among breast cancer patients," wrote the researchers from Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The researchers analysed data from the Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study, a large, population-based study of 5,042 female breast cancer survivors aged between 20 and 75 in China.

After about four years of follow-up, 44 total deaths and 534 recurrences were documented. Soy food intake, as measured by either soy protein or soy isoflavone intake, was inversely associated with mortality and recurrence, said the researchers.

The researchers noted significant reductions in both mortality and breast cancer recurrence with increasing soy protein intake, up to a level of 11 grams per day. No additional benefits were observed with greater intake.

"In summary, in this population-based prospective study, we found that soy food intake is safe and was associated with lower mortality and recurrence among breast cancer patients... This study suggests that moderate soy food intake is safe and potentially beneficial for women with breast cancer," they concluded.

ARE NATUROPATHIC HERBAL ANTIBIOTICS:
REALLY AN ALTERNATIVE TO PRESCRIPTION MEDS?

Bacteria are very smart in terms of survival. Because prescription antibiotics (i.e. Cipro, Levaquin, Vancomycin, on and on) have been used and overused, various strains of bacteria they are used to combat have become resistant. Antioxidants help build the immune system against infections, but cannot "kill" them. With Rx antibiotics running their course, there are arguments about natural bacteria fighters used by ancient Hindi, Chinese and Native Americans.

At the getgo, the medical community disavows any naturopathic home remedies being of any value in fighting bacteria which cause systemic infections. One might ask, why then, did they work for our ancestors? Their answer, less strains of bacteria, since new types of bacteria have emerged in our current time. The debate goes back and forth, but here are the herbal antibacteriastats which are upheld by some holistic practioners.

Tea Tree Oil (sometimes spelled Tee) arises most often in ads for herbal antibacteria remedies. However, a better case is made for the Grapefruit Seed extract. Some herbal product labs have concluded that the Grapefruit Seed has certain antiviral, parasite fighting elements not found in other citrus. The seed extract has been reportedly tested on a wide variety of pathological orgasms (the stuff infections are made of) with success.

Oleuropein, derived from the olive leaf, has also shown to have anti-microbial properties. However, there are no wide studies among naturopathics which demonstrate the extract actually "kills" bacteria. It does, however, strengthen the immune system.

Collodial Silver, which has been researched by Dr.Jonathan V. Wright. His lab's studies have shown that bacteria is disrupted by the silver's ions and causes viral organisms to become nil. While water filtration systems use Collordial Silver in the filter itself, would one want to ingest it? It does have side effects, the least of which is skin discoloration. Over-using Collodial Silver could not only cause the infection to rebound, but to worsen. While it has been used as a natural antibiotic since the time of the Sumerian tribes, it is not considered safe by many naturopaths.

Infections, of any type, systemic, respiratory, dermal, urinary, are nothing to play around with. If any infection becomes septic or decubedes, very serious, even fatal results are at high risk. Therefore, until more proof is in on herbal remedies, if you have an infection, see a doctor or go to an emergency room. Use herbal therapeutics as immunity defense (this is also true of the Probiotics such as L-acideophilus which should not be used with autoimmune disorders). Herbs have not been shown to be a bacterial infection curative by any evidence you would want to put your life on. That is the truth, with all due respect to the marvelous preventative benefits of herbal remedies.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS AND HERBAL THERAPEUTIC REMEDIES

Herbal therapy has not been validated by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. The methodology is not presented to treat, diagnose or cure a medical condition. Consult your healthcare professional concerning any symptoms she or he is not aware of and periodically go for consultations and checkups. Consult your physician before using any herbal or other therapeutic that has not been recommended for you. Remember, anything you ingest has the potential of interacting with prescription medication.

ACNE Acne Vulgaris occurs usually in (but is not necessarily limited to) adolescents. (the more common "adult middle to senior age acne" is actually Rosacea). At the onset of puberty, skin, especially facial skin glands become excessively oily which creates the environment for contaminants and bacteria buildup. In turn, inflamed pimples result (the "zits"). Severe acne may exacerbate to cysts. A treating physician will likely do blood work to ascertain B Vitamin deficiency and may inject concentrated B Vitamin complex directly into the skin. Increasing intake of Folic Acid may help acne. High potency daily vitamins should also be considered. However, if there is not vitamin deficiency, then avoid overdosage of B vitamins as in paradox this may worsen the acne. Have a blood test performed to check the level of B vitamins, especially B12. The herbal remedy Burdock Root, as an adjunct to supplementary nutrients, cleanses blood cells which in turn may relieve the contaminant inflammation. Tea Tree Oil is a naturopathic antibacteriastat and antiseptic when applied to the affected area. Aloe Vera based ointment may provide relief from the irritation.

ARTHRITIS There are many forms of arthritis, i.e. rheumatoid, psoriatic, , osteo, bursitis) and it is a family of joint inflammation ailments which afflicts young athletes and the elderly. The medical community has come to recognize the herbal glucosamine and chondroiton as alternatives to NSAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs i.e. indomethacin, Celebrex) which have gastro-intestinal side effects in many people), steroids (i.e., cortisone, dexamethasone [Decadron]) and otc medications (i.e., aspirin, naproxen, acetomephin). Niacin has been shown to decrease pain and Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is the excellent body antiosidant which also supplies collagen to the joint tissue. Herbal remedies include Ginger, Willow Bark and Red Pepper, naturopathic analgesics.

ASTHMA Asthma is the constriction of air passages which results in wheezing, shortness of breath and, in advanced state, Chronic Obstructive Pulminary Disorder (COPD). Acuta asthma attacks cause the sufferer a feeling of actually losing life, because it virtually "takes the air out." Asthmatics are usually allergic to pollen, pet dander, dust, bird feathers and certain foods. Ironically, caffeine actually helps keep bronchial tubes open and it is an ingredient in some prescription medications for asthma. Drinking a cup of coffee in the beginning of what seems to be a "bad asthma day" may make the going better. Niacin is an esssential nutrient for asthmatics. Inhalation devices decrease niacin levels in the body. EPAs (discussed in the above sections) and CoQ Enzymes have been show to aid asthmatic relief, ask your physician about these over the counter supplements if you have asthma. The herbal remedy Gingko Biloba has been shown to be a therapeutic protein in interfering with bronchial constrictions and thereby minimize effects of asthmatic breathing spasms.

BREAST CANCER Doctors now believe the dysfunctional cells which become cancer are actually viral (a virus). In women, menopause and postmenopause increase the risk of breast cancer because of the anomoly of cell activity. Nutrition, frrom childhood to elder age, is the key to a defense against breast cancer. A feminine formula multivitamin should be taken daily beginning at prepubesence and throughout life. The American Cancer Society affirms healthy, high fiber diet, less sugary snacks, has also been shown to be a preventitive measure against breast cancer. Herbs Astragulas, Echinea, Milk Thistle, Sage, Flaxseed, Garlic and Sage are naturopathic defenses against breast cancer. Sugar, alcohol and saturated fat increase breast cancer risk.

BULIMIA NERVOSA (BINGE EATING) Bulimia Nervosa, or Bulimia, is a neurosis affecting predominantly young women which evokes overeating and then the use of laxitives, enemas, or vomiting to purge the system. Eventually, involuntary spasmodic vomiting may occur, bringing up acidic erosion. The syndrome results in an imbalance of body chemistry electrolytes and malnutrition of bones, resulting in being prone to fractures. Many bulimics exercise to the point of exhaustion. Bulimia can result in death at a young age. Sugar intake exacerbates any binge eating, especially Bulimia. There are no herbal remedies for Bulimia. The condition requires both medical and psychological professional treatment. A specialist may recommend medical intervention which interrupts the brain's craving for food and a psychological therapy addresses the emotional distress that invokes the Bulimia syndrome behavior. A health profesional, in addition to prescribed treatment, will usually recommend a daily high potency vitamin supplement with iron and a sugar-free diet.

CANDIDAS (YEAST INFECTIONS) Candidas Albicans is a fungus commonly called yeast. A small amount of Candidas colonization in the intestines female vaginal tract is normal and harmless. When the yeast grows excessively, it turns from an infection defense element to infection. This can be brought about in any number of ways from consuming too many sweets to a reaction from a prescription medication. Taking a Biotin supplement in conjunction with Lactobacillus Acidpholus, the probiotic "friendly" defense bacteria found in yogurt, helps restore proper Candidas colonization levels. Your doctor may determine, through blood analysis, that anemia may be present, in which case an iron supplement would be recommended. Garlic acts as a naturopathic antibiotic which has shown to increase the body's ability to fight yeast infection. Herbs goldenrod and sage have shown to stabilize Candidas. Cranberry increases immunity to various types of systemic infections, if you are on a blood thinner such as Coumadin (Warfarin), ask your doctor before drinking Cranberry Juice. Reduce sugar intake and eliminate all dessert sweets; sugar promotes yeast infections

CANKER SORES Canker sores are tiny ulcers usually affecting the mouth. Medical science has no certainty of their cause, but theories include lack of dental hygiene, virus, food allergy, nutritional deficiency and autoimmune disorder. Increase in Zinc supplement has been shown to diminish the frequency of Canker sores.L- Acidophilus, the friendly bacteria, is also accredited as a naturopathic defense. Native Americans have traditionally used Geranium herb to treat Canker Sores.

CARDIAC DYSFUNCTION AND INFARCTION ("HEART DISEASE" There are many dysfunctions which afflict the heart, including angina, myocardial infarction, arrhythmia. Never assume you "know" what is affecting your heart. If you have chest pains, shortness of breath, or any indication of a heart problem, consult your doctor immediately. If your chest pain is more than just a mild tightness, go to an emergency room. Heart attacks occur when arteries carrying oxygen and blood to the heart become clogged or are in infarction (closing). Angina, chest pain, is chronic with exertion. This and hypertension result in cardiac dysfunction. So does poor eating habits which places the "clogs" (fatty deposits and bad cholesterol) in the arteries. Nutrition and eliminating junk food habits are paramount. Herbal therapeutics include Sumer, Cayenne and Valerian Root (used judiciously) to lower blood pressure. Always consult a health care professional in matters pertaining to your heart and read recommendations from The American Heart Association.

CARPEL TUNNEL SYNDROME Naned for the wrist bones (carpels), Carpel Tunnel Syndrome is the inflammation of fibrous channels which deliver nutrients to the bone. The carpel becomes inflamed with repetitive use of the wrist and hands, as in using a computer(the writer here is feeling it now as he types this). CTS is also prominent in pregnant women. B vitamins nourish the carpel. Herbal antinflammatories for the fibrous tissue include Willow Bark, Chamomile and Sage. The other option is to use otc Aspirin or Naproxen. If the pain is severe, consult your physician.

CELIAC (SPRUE) Called either Celiac or Sprue, the condition is an autoimmune disorder in which the villi, small intestine, becomes chronically alergic to Glutens (wheat, barley, rye, their derivitives, or cross-contaminants which may be present in oats or a "Gluten Free" food product made in a factory that also processes the allergins). Celiac is increasing in children. Estimates now hold that 1 in 118 people have this autoimmune disorder. It is genetic. Celiacs suffer abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, and foul smelling or greasy bowel stool. The only cure for Celiac is a total Gluten free diet. Some Gluten Free specialized food providers sell certified foods free of allergins and contaminants. Celiacs are anemic, particularly if their condition is not diagnosed and treated. The determining test is a colonoscopy with biopsy. Blood tests are, at best, indicators, not verifying. Nutritional supplements with iron are usually recommended by Gastro-Intestinal specialists, some may prescribe a high potency iron complex such as Chromagen FA, or a prenatal multivitamin.

COLON (COLORECTAL) CANCER The colon is the large intestine leading to the rectum. When the cells in the colon become dysfunctional, polyps occur. The polyps may either be benign or malignant (cancerous). Colonoscopy with biopsy determines if polyps developed cancer. As with all types of cancer, good nutrition, avoiding "junk" foods, is the best defense. Flaxseed (fish oil) provides essential EFA's which promote cell health. Excessive alcohol has been determined to increase cancer risk.

CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE See Cardiac ailments

CHRON'S DISEASE (GRANULOMA COLITIS) Chron's Disease is an inflammatory intestinal condition in which the body attacks it's own intestinal tissue. Researches believe the root cause is bacteria. A low carb diet, rich in nutrients and "good" protein is the best defense against recurring exacerbations. Since there are two types of Colitis (Ulcerative and Granuloma), medical tests are needed to determine the diagnosis. The herb Aloe Vera, taken internally as a gelcap, soothes the afflicted lining and aids healing.

DEPRESSION Depression is often thought as only psychological. However, there are body chemistry factors which can also trigger the feeling of depression. A lack of Biotin, for example, has been shown to effect mood. Serotonin depletion in the body may also trigger depressed state. Increasing complex carbohydrates in the body aids in this deficiency, a diet high in raw fruits and vegetables, brown rice and soy. Thiamin and Riboflavin deficiencies also come into play and in such case increasing the intake of B vitamin supplements (under a doctors care if you are on prescription medications) may lift the depression cloud. If you feel depressed and there is nothing getting you down, ask your doctor about the possibility of anemia. Licorice is a naturopathic, safe antidepressant. St. John's Wort has been used by herbalists, but may have side effects and interact with prescription and over the counter drugs.

DIABETES MELLITUS We are all familiar with what Diabetes is: the body's inability to produce sufficient insulin (via the Pancreas) to maintain proper blood sugar levels. Doctor's consider a blood sugar level from 90 to 120 the safe range. Levels under 80 may bring on hypoglycemia, over 150 hyperglycemia and both are medically dangerous and life threatening. Blindness and loss of limbs are the result of treatment not being followed. Juvenile diabetic onset is categorized as TYPE I, adult onset as TYPE II. Diabetics must watch their diet carefully, monitor blood sugar levels and follow all the guidelines set by the treating physician, including meticulous use of insulin or oral medication as prescribed. Soluble fiber, especially Psyllium, aids the body in properly processing starch from foods. Most naturopathics recommend 50mg. soluble fiber daily. EFA's and GPA's (Alpha Lineoic Acid & Fish Oil) aid the body in discerning the good fat conversion vs. bad. Alcohol and tobacco impair the body's sensitivity to alcohol, therefore diabetics should not drink or smoke. Herbal therapeutics which may also aid diabetes (consult your physician) include Fenugreek and Ginseng, they assist the body in stabilizing blood sugar.

DIARRHEA, IRRITATED BOWEL SYNDROME Diarrhea and IBS are triggered by bacterial, viral, parasitic and other contaminants collected in the stomach from a wide variety of sources, from spoiled food to tainted drinking water. The digestive system goes into overdrive to eliminate the contamination and loose, watery stool eliminating uncontrollably is the result. Diarrhea also results from overdosing on fiber products and laxatives and misuse of antibiotics. Chronic Diarrhea may be diagnosed as a symptom to food allergy. If Diarrhea is severe or recurring, immediate medical attention must be sought. Abstain from all food and drink (except purified water or ice chips) until you see a healthcare professional, Once you have been seen by a doctor, on her or his advice, slowly add good food back to your diet. Apple, including applesauce, helps to form stools. Your doctor may also recommend a regulated daily dose of Psyllium (fiber). Fenugreek and Raspberry herb also aid in recovery of irritated digestive tracts. Note that dairy products exacerbate Diarrhea

DIVERTICULITIS Diverticulitis is the inflammation of Colon's mucous membranes which cause small pouches in the colon lining. (diverticula). The result is cramping, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea and blood in the stool. Fiber and nutrients are key factors in defending against Diverticulitis. Garlic fights bacteria in the stomach, use it in foods. L'Glutamine promotes intestinal lining wellness. Herbal Aloe Vera gelcaps aids healing in the colon lining after Diverticulitis is treated by a physician. Alfalfa also is a widely used herbal therapeutic.

DYSMENORRHEA (PAINFUL MENSTRUATION) Exacerbation of menstruation symptoms in women, usually cramping cycles, is caused by prostaglandin imbalances which constrict blood vessels and evoke spasms in the muscular wall of the uteris. EFA's (Omega-3 essential fatty acids contained in fish oil) aid in minimizing this syndrome. Magnesium (in careful doses) eases spasmodic reaction. Angelica Root, Rosemary and Wild Yam herbs have antispasmodic properties which alleviate the symptoms of Dysmenorrhea. The Wild Yam also relieves cramping.

HEPATITIS When the liver is inflamed, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting occurs. Change in urine color is also a symptom. Hepatitis results from viruses in the liver tract. The A strain is food contaminated by fecal matter. B is passed through body fluids and lymphatic matter, C and D from infected blood. Vitamins, especially C, as antioxidants increase the body's immune system, but does not in themselves protect absolutely against Hepatitis. Alcohol and sugar exacerbate the inflammation. Herbal remedy adjuncts include Burdock Root which helps cleanse the liver and Milk Thistle which heals the effects on the inflammation.

HERPES Herpes is a virus which attacks the body system. The virus enters the body through open skin pores and cracks in the skin. Herpes travels through nerve cells and colonizes in the spinal cord or cerebum. Type 1 Herpes causes skin eruptions and cold sores. Type 2 has subliminal symptoms. Herpes Zoster ("shingles") is the varicella virus which causes skin pox. Licorice is said to have certain antiviral properties helpful in Herpes. It is not a cure or preventative. Lemon Balm and Thyme are soothing herbal appliques.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE & HYPERTENSION Hypertension may result from stress or organic causes, such as a kidney dysfunction. Studies have shown that African-Americans are more prone to hypertension than Caucasians, Indians, Hindi, Asians and Hispanics. The exact reason for this is unknown. In hypertension, an overabundance of adrenaline is produced by the body in some, angiogenics in others. Higher levels of Angiotestin II may result in constriction of blood vesels. Vitamin nutrition and EFA's (Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids) are significant in the body's defense against hypertension. Tobacco and alcohol inccrease the risk substantially. Magnesium relaxes blood vessels and CoQ enzumes aid in lowering blood pressure. Cayenne, Chamomile, Rosemary and Valerian are herbal therapeutics which reduce tension in the body system. Garlic helps in lowering blood pressure..

IMPOTENCE An "umbrella" name for a wide variety of sexual dysfunction causes, impotence is the inability of the male to maintain an erection. Factors range from neurologial disorder to overuse of alcohol, narcotics and tobacco. Numerous psychological patterns also are related to the dysfunction. Zinc is the predominant nutrient which embues sexual potency in both men and women. Herbal remedies include Ginseng, which acts as an aphrodisiac and Guarama has been used extensively in Brazil for male potency. Ginger bolsters sperm motility in both male and female fertility.

INFERTILITY (FEMALE) Feminine infertility can result from the use of an IUD, ovarian cysts, pelvic infections or hormonal imbalance. Deficiency in Folic Acid and/or Iron may contribute to infertility. Dong Quai Root has been an extensively used herbal therapeutic. Damiana and PABA (Para Amino Benzoic Acid) are also considered excellent herbal remedies.

INSOMNIA The term "insomnia" has been used to cover numerous sleep disorders. While stress and tension can cause sleepness nights, so can deeper rooted neurological ailments. Long term insomnia should be treated by medical professionals who can determine the root order for inability to get sufficient sleep. Ambien and Lunestra are popular prescription medications for insomnia. They are safe when used as directed under a doctor's care In occasional insomnia, Inostisol, Melatonin may balance the body's ability to attain rest. Herbal Valerian and Passion Flower induce sleep, use minimal dosages. Lavender aromatherapy also helps to induce slumber, as does Chamomile Tea before bedtime. Use what works best, do not combine herbal sleep therapeutics. Remember that using any sleep therapy can result in dependence.

LUPUS (SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS) Lupus, a conditional predominantly in girls and women, is an attack upon body tissue by it's own immune system which "confuses" the tissue as foreign matter. Drug interactions, especially in psychotropic medications, may trigger Lupus. The condition affects the skin, liver, eyes, lungs, and/or the neuro-muscular and cardio-vascular system. Gamma Lineoic Acid (GLA) found in Fish Oil has been shown to alleviate symptomes of autoimmune disorders, including Lupus. Herbal therpauetics Alfalfa and Milk Thistle minimize the effects of Lupus, but do not cure.

MORNING SICKNESS (PREGNANCY) During the first two to three months of pregnancy, the body increases hormone levels. This brings about discomfort, especially in initial pregnancy, of nausea, vertigo, vomiting and lower abdominal pain. Sufficient B Vitamin levels are important during pregnancy. Herbal Ginger Root alleviates morning sickness queasiness. Raspberry Leaf Tea relaxes uterine spasms.

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS MS is a widespread neurological disorder with numerous disabling effects, including, but not limited to, weakness of the limbs, ambulation difficulty, impaired eye to hand coordination, neurogenic spastic bladder (incontinence), loss of bowel control and vision impairment . The myelin surrounding the spinal cord become necrotic and the lesions cause impairment of "messages" sent through the neurological system. It is akin to a damaged electrical cord which short circuits because the insulation is frayed. Science has yet to determine the exact cause of MS, but new theories lean toward autoimmune disorder. There are many MS treatments and only a medical professional, usually a Neurologist, can determine the proper course. Good nutrition plays a key role in minimizing the demyelinating effects of Multiple Sclerosis. L'Glycine promotes spinal cord myelin health.

MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY MD is degrading muscle impairment that doctors believe genetic. Selenium, in high doses, is being tested as an aid in advanced MD. CoQ10 enzyme has been reported to strengthen the body's function in MD patients. Herbal Soy Lecithin may slow muscular degeneration.

OSTEOPOROSIS In Osteoporosis, the skeletal bones become thin and brittle, prone to fracture. While it typically has affected middle to elder women, the condition's starting age group is becoming younger. This may be do to tendencies to eat "fast food" and beverages that are not nutritional. When bones become deficient in vital minerals needed to form new layers as older layers decay, the bone stamina deteriorates. Calcium, Vitamin D and Magnesium are essential for bone health in women, men and children. In some cases, Osteoporosis may have genetic factors. Boron has been shown to maintain calcium levels in the body. Parsley is abundant in Boron.

PARKINSON'S DISEASE Parkinson's is a nerve disorder resulting from the brain's inability to produce Dopamin. What causes this problem in the brain is yet unknown. The Dopamin deficiency results in tremors, gait impairment, eczema-like eruptions on the complexion and stiffness of facial muscles. Doctors usually prescribe the drug L'Dopa to partially compensate for the Dopamin deficiency in Parkinson's. Niacon and Folic Acid have also been shown to aid in the affectations of Parkinson's. The herbal Fava bean contains L'Dopa. Evening Primrose Oil and Passion Flower alleviate symptoms of Parkinson's Disease.

PEPTIC ULCER When the intestine's protective mucosa lining deteriorates, the environment for ulceration becomes an increasing risk. Symptoms are varying degrees of pain and discomfort in the stomach. Bacteria generally exacerbates, if not causes Peptic Ulcers. Many over the counter medications, most utilizing Bismuth as the relief ingredient, reduce the symptom (not the cause) of Peptic Ulcers and "heartburn." Vitamin nutrition is essential in warding off this condition. Gamma Linoleic Acid has been shown to build the digestive system's defense against Peptic Ulcers. L'Glutamine, a herbal remedy, has been shown to promote healing of intestinal ulcerations. Ginger Root herb provides symptomatic relief. It has intestinal anti-inflammatory properties as does Chamomile. Garlic has certain antiobotic properties which may assist in avoiding Peptic Ulcer exacerbation.

PHENYLKETONURIA (PKU) Phenylketonuira is an autoimmune disorder in which consumption of non protein animo acids in the Phenylketonic chemical family produces neuroligical anomalies. A primary ingredient in this family of food additives is Phenylalanine, the primary chemical element of the artificial sweetener Aspartame. Some researchers hold theory that excessive intake of Phenylalanine disrupts the neuronic activity of the brain. This has yet to be evaluated or affirmed by the Food and Drug Administration.

PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME (PMS) Menstrual cycling in women come and go in usually 28 day cycles. Distress is moreso in some women than others and it is difficult for medical science to pinpoint why this is so. Symptoms of PMS vary widely, from emotional duress to physical discomfort. Vertigo, fluid retention, breast inflammation and weight gain are also among the indications of PMS. Proper nutrition and EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids found in fish oil) are important in minimizing the affects of Premenstrual Syndrome. PMS may result in Magnesium and Zinc deficiencies. Isoflavones, found in soy and nut products, may alleve emotional symptoms. Herbal remedies include Evening Primrose Oil, Valerian, Chamomile and Angelica Root which "relax" the distresses. Avoid excess sugary sweets especially during PMS exacerbation. Higher sugar level in the blood will aggravate symptoms.

PSORIASIS The common and distressing skin condition Psoriasis has of late been examined as an autoimmune condition. Doctors knew that the lesions were the result of hyperactive skin cell growth, the root cause has always been a dermatologist's mystery. Genetic in nature, it is often exacerbated by emotional distress and skin abrasion. Prescription medications range from cortisteroid ointments and injections to PUVA ray and sometimes methyltrexate is used. Some psoriatics find relief in a simple dollar tube of petroleum jelly. Many mail order "quick fixes" are frauds and usually nothing more than high priced Aloe Vera gels. Proper intake of Vitamin A, D and E are vital to skin health. Poriasis may range from red scaly patches to postules, the conditions come and go in some and remain constant in others and doctors do not know what factors are in these variances. A herbal remedy which helps some Psoriatics combines Lavender and Angelic Root with time in the sun. When Psoriasis is present in those also having arthritis, doctors see a correlation as Psoriatic Arthritis; that is, when arthritis inflammation increases, so does the Psoriasis irritation

RAYNAUD'S SYNDROME Raynaud's is a spasmodic condition affecting mostly younger women. When arteries of the hands of legs spasm and affect proper blood supply, the skin whitens and/or turns purplish. Throbbing pain is often present. Raynaud's is often brought about by exposure to cold temperatures. Smoking greatly exacerbates Raynaud's. Prescription medications (Nifedipine, Procardia) are given to control artery spasms. Niacin supplements have been shown to decrease arracks of Raynaud's. CoenqumeQ10 supplement facilitates healthy blood oxygen levels. Bioflavinoids assist in good blood flow. Herbally, Evening Primrose Oil and Garlic aid good blood flow. Grandma's remedy for Raynaud's Syndrome: red pepper, clove and vegetable oil rubbed on affected areas. It still works.

RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME Jumpy lower limbs at bedtime is a condition which baffles the medical community. RLS attacks also encompass muscle crampness. Some doctors and naturopaths hold that RLS may be triggered by a deficiency in Folic Acid. Another medical study found that high blood sugar levels triggered Restless Legs Syndrome. Eliminating, or at least sharply reducing, caffeine is essential in controlling, reducing or even eliminating RLS attacks, as does to end smoking and consuming alcoholic beverages.

SCLERODERMA Hardening of skin, Scleroderma, is caused by the body's autoimmune system attacking it's own skin tissue. Scarring occurs on the skin, in some cases also in internal organs. Dysphasia (difficulty in swallowing and breathing) may accompany Scleroderma. Treatment by a healthcare professional is essential. The Gota Kula herb has been traditionally used with prescription medication to regenerate damaged skin cells.

URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS When bacterial elements colonize in the bladder, the urinary tract becomes infected. Urinanalysis performed at a lab, under the order of a doctor, determins the particular strain of infection. An appropriate antibiotic is prescribed to "kill" the determined type(s) of bacteria in the urinary tract. Medical prudence determines that overuse of antibiotics increases resistance to them. If you have frequent UTI's, your doctor will likely advise you to drink very large amounts of purified water rather than repeated use of an antibiotic. In general, the more fluids consumed on a daily basis, the better the bladder will drain bacterial matter to avoid pooling. Unsweetened cranberry juice has been shown to acidify the urine and therefore increase defense against bacteria. If you are taking a blood thinning medication such as Coumadin (Warfarin), ask your doctor before drinking cranberry juice. Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin C, provides similar defense against urinary tract infections. Doctors often recommend 1000 to 2000 milligrams of Vitamin C each day for those prone to UTI's, especially patients with indwelling urinary catheters.

URTICARIA ("HIVES") Urticaria is an exacerbation of skin eruptions caused by any number of allergic reactions, or sun exposure. In Urticaria, histamine is released to outer skin layers. Only a doctor can pinpoint the allergin. Stress usually increases the symptoms. Lactobacillus Acidophilus, a probiotic or "friendly" bacteria that fights the bad bacteria, has been shown to be a defensive against Urticaria. L'Acidophilus is found in yogurt, it is less effectively available in capsule form. Aloe Vera and Chamomile herbal ointments, applied to affected areas, relieve the discomfort of "hives."

HAVING A HEALTHY & HAPPY PREGNANCY

Pregnant? Taking care of yourself has never been more important. Of course, you'll probably get advice from everyone - your doctor, family members, friends, co-workers, and even complete strangers - about what you should and shouldn't be doing. But staying healthy during pregnancy depends on you, so it's crucial to arm yourself with information about the many ways to keep you and your baby as healthy as possible.

The Key to protecting the health of your coming baby is to get regular, qualified prenatal care. If you think you're pregnant, call your health care provider to schedule an appointment. You should have your first examination during the first 6 to 8 weeks of your pregnancy, which is when your menstrual period is 2 to 4 weeks late. At this first visit, your health care provider will figure out how many weeks pregnant you are based on a physical examination and the date of your last period. He or she will also use this information to predict your delivery date (however, an ultrasound performed sometime during your pregnancy will help to verify that date). If you're healthy and there are no complicating risk factors, you can expect to see your health care provider: every 4 weeks until the 28th week of pregnancy. then every 2 weeks until 36 weeks. then once a week until delivery Throughout your pregnancy, your health care provider will check your weight and blood pressure while also checking the growth and development of your baby (by doing things like feeling your abdomen, listening for the fetal heartbeat starting during the second trimester, and measuring your belly). During the span of your pregnancy, you'll also have prenatal tests, including blood, urine, and cervical tests, and probably at least one ultrasound.

If you still need to choose a health care provider to counsel and treat you during your pregnancy, there are several options: obstetricians/gynecologists (also known as OB/GYNs - doctors who specialize in pregnancy and childbirth, as well as women's health care) family practitioners (doctors who provide a range of services for patients of all ages - in some cases, this includes obstetrical care) certified nurse-midwives (advanced practice nurses specializing in women's health care needs, including prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care for "normal" pregnancies; there are also other kinds of midwives, but you should look for one with formal training who's been certified in the field) Any of these is a good choice if you're healthy and there's no reason to anticipate complications with your pregnancy and delivery. However, nurse-midwives do need to have a doctor available for the delivery in case an unexpected problem arises or a cesarean section (C-section) has to be performed.

You are now eating for two (or more!), this is not the time to cut calories or go on a diet. In fact, it's just the opposite - you need about 300 extra calories a day, especially later in your pregnancy when your baby grows quickly. If you're very thin or carrying twins, you'll need even more. But if you're overweight, your health care provider may advise that you consume fewer extra calories. Healthy eating is always important, but especially when you're pregnant. So, it's important to make sure your calories come from nutritious foods so they can contribute to your baby's growth and development. Try to maintain a well-balanced diet that incorporates the dietary guidelines including: lean meats, fruits, vegetables, whole-grain breads, low-fat dairy products.

By eating a healthy, balanced diet you're more likely to get the nutrients you need. But you will need more of the essential nutrients (especially calcium, iron, and folic acid) than you did before you became pregnant. Your health care provider will prescribe prenatal vitamins to be sure both you and your growing baby are getting enough. But taking prenatal vitamins doesn't mean you can eat a diet that's completely lacking in nutrients. It's important to remember that you still need to eat well while pregnant. Prenatal vitamins are meant to supplement your diet not be your only source of much-needed nutrients.

Most women 19 and older - including those who are pregnant - don't often get the daily 1,000 mg of calcium that's recommended. Because your growing baby's calcium demands are high, you should increase your calcium consumption to prevent a loss of calcium from your own bones. Your doctor will also likely prescribe prenatal vitamins for you, which may contain some extra calcium. Good sources of calcium are: low fat dairy products including milk, cheese, and especially yogurt for "friendly bacteria" cultures that thwart the bad bacteria, also, calcium-fortified products, including orange juice, soy milk, and non sugary cereals. dark green vegetables including spinach, kale, and broccoli, tofu soups, dried beans, almonds (natural).
<
Pregnant women need 28 to 30 mg of iron every day. Iron is needed to make hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells. Red blood cells circulate throughout the body to deliver oxygen to all its cells. Without enough iron, the body can't make enough red blood cells and the body's tissues and organs won't get the oxygen they need to function well. So it's especially important for pregnant women to get enough iron in their daily diets - for themselves and their growing babies. 0Although the nutrient can be found in various kinds of foods, iron from meat sources is more easily absorbed by the body than iron found in plant foods. Some examples of iron-rich foods include: red meat, dark poultry, salmon, eggs (grade A and AA), enriched grains, dried beans and peas; also non-sugary dried fruits, leafy green vegetables, blackstrap molasses, iron-fortified breakfast cereals (non-sugary).

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all women of childbearing age - and especially those who are planning a pregnancy - get about 400 micrograms (0.4 milligrams) of folic acid supplements every day. That can be from a multivitamin or folic acid supplement in addition to the folic acid found in food. Studies have shown that taking folic acid supplements 1 month prior to and throughout the first 3 months of pregnancy decrease the risk of neural tube defects by up to 70%. The neural tube - formed during the first 28 days of the pregnancy, usually before a woman even knows she's pregnant - goes on to become the baby's developing brain and spinal cord. When the neural tube doesn't form properly, the result is a neural tube defect such as spina bifida. Again, your health care provider can prescribe a prenatal vitamin that contains the right amount of folic acid. Some pregnancy health care providers even recommend taking an additional folic acid supplement, especially if a woman has previously had a child with a neural tube defect. If you're buying an over-the-counter supplement, keep in mind that most multivitamins contain folic acid, but not all of them have enough folic acid to meet the nutritional needs of a pregnant woman. So, be sure to check labels carefully before choosing one and check with your health care provider.

It's also important to drink plenty of fluids, especially water, during pregnancy. A woman's blood volume increases dramatically during pregnancy, and drinking enough water each day can help prevent common problems such as dehydration and constipation.

Exercise During Pregnancy

The 2005 dietary guidelines recommend that healthy pregnant women get 30 minutes or more of moderate intensity physical activity every day. Exercising during pregnancy has been shown to be extremely beneficial. If you've been involved in an exercise program before becoming pregnant, talk to your health care provider about whether it's safe to continue. If you haven't been active and/or you have a high-risk pregnancy, ask your health care provider how you can safely start. Low-impact, moderate intensity exercise activities (such as walking and swimming) are great choices. You can also opt for yoga or pilates classes, DVDs, or videos that are tailored for pregnancy. These are both low-impact and work on strength, flexibility, and relaxation. You should, however, limit high-impact aerobics and avoid certain sports and activities that pose a risk of falling or abdominal injury. Typical limitations include contact sports, downhill skiing, and horseback riding.

It's also very important to be aware of how your body changes, even minimal differentials. During pregnancy, your body produces a hormone known as relaxin, which is believed to help prepare the pubic area and the cervix for the birth. The relaxin loosens the ligaments in your body, making you less stable and more prone to injury. It's easy to overstretch or strain yourself, especially the joints in your pelvis, lower back, and knees. In addition, your center of gravity shifts as your pregnancy progresses, so you may feel off-balance and at risk of falling. Keep these in mind when you choose an activity, and don't overdo it.

Whatever type of exercise you choose, make sure to take frequent breaks and remember to drink plenty of fluids. And use common sense - slow down or stop if you get short of breath or feel uncomfortable. If you have any questions about doing a certain sport or activity during your pregnancy, talk to your health care provider for specific guidelines.

It's important to get enough sleep during your pregnancy. Your body is working hard to accommodate a new life, so you'll probably feel more tired than usual. And as your baby gets bigger, it will be harder to find a comfortable position when you're trying to sleep. Lying on your side with your knees bent is likely to be the most comfortable position as your pregnancy progresses. It also makes your heart's job easier because it keeps the baby's weight from applying pressure to the large blood vessels that carry blood to and from your heart and your feet and legs. Lying on your side can also help prevent or reduce varicose veins, constipation, hemorrhoids, and swelling in your legs.

Some healthcare professionals specifically recommend that pregnant women sleep on the left side. Because your liver is on the right side of your abdomen, lying on your left side helps keep the uterus off that large organ. Lying on your left side also optimizes blood flow to the placenta and, therefore, your baby. Ask what your health care provider recommends. In most cases, lying on either side should do the trick and help take some pressure off your back. To create a more comfortable resting position, either way, prop pillows between your legs, behind your back, and underneath your belly.

When you're pregnant, what you don't put into your body (or expose your body to) is almost as important as what you do. Here are some things to avoid: Although it may seem harmless to have a glass of wine at dinner or a mug of beer out with friends, no one has determined what's a "safe amount" of alcohol to consume during pregnancy. One of the most common known causes of mental and physical birth defects, alcohol produces more severe abnormalities in a developing fetus than heroin, cocaine, or marijuana. Alcohol is easily passed along to the baby, who is less equipped to eliminate alcohol than the mother. That means an unborn baby tends to develop a high concentration of alcohol, which stays in the baby's system for longer periods than it would in the mother's. And moderate alcohol intake, as well as periodic binge drinking, can damage a baby's developing nervous system. If you had a drink or two before you even knew you were pregnant (as many women do), don't worry too much about it. But your best bet is to not drink any alcohol at all for the rest of your pregnancy.

Pregnant women who use drugs may be placing their unborn babies at risk for premature birth, poor growth, birth defects, and behavior and learning problems. And their babies could also be born addicted to those drugs themselves. If you're pregnant and using drugs, a health clinic such as Planned Parenthood can recommend health care providers, at little or no cost, who can help you quit your habit and have a healthier pregnancy. If you've used any drugs at any time during your pregnancy, it's important to inform your health care provider. Even if you've quit, your unborn child could still be at risk for health problems.

You wouldn't light a cigarette, put it in your baby's mouth, and encourage your little one to puff away. As ridiculous as this scenario seems, pregnant women who continue to smoke are allowing their fetus to smoke, too. The smoking mother passes nicotine and carbon monoxide to her growing baby. The risks of smoking to the fetus include:
stillbirth,
prematurity,>br> low birth weight,
sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS),
asthma and other respiratory problems,

If you smoke, having a baby may be the motivation you need to quit. Talk to your health care provider about options for stopping your smoking habit.

High caffeine consumption has been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage, so it's probably wise to limit or avoid caffeine altogether if you can. If you're having a hard time cutting out coffee cold turkey, here's how you can start: Cut your consumption down to one or two cups a day, Gradually reduce the amount by combining decaffeinated coffee with regular coffee. Eventually cut out the regular coffee altogether. And remember that caffeine is not limited to coffee. Green and black tea, cola, and other soft drinks contain caffeine. Try switching to decaffeinated products (which may still have some caffeine, but in much smaller amounts) or caffeine-free alternatives.

If you're wondering whether chocolate (and who doesn't love chocolate?), which also contains caffeine, is a concern, the good news is that you can have it in moderation. Whereas the average chocolate bar has anywhere from 5 to 30 milligrams of caffeine, there's 95 to 135 milligrams in a cup of brewed coffee. So, small amounts of chocolate are fine.

Certain Foods Although you need to eat plenty of healthy foods during pregnancy, you also need to avoid food-borne illnesses, such as listeriosis and toxoplasmosis, which can be life-threatening to an unborn baby and may cause birth defects or miscarriage. Foods you'll want to steer clear of include: soft, unpasteurized cheeses (often advertised as "fresh") such as feta, goat, Brie, Camembert, and blue cheese unpasteurized milk, juices, and apple cider, raw eggs or foods containing raw eggs, including mousse, tiramisu, raw cookie dough, homemade ice cream, and Caesar dressing (although some store-bought brands of the dressing may not contain raw eggs) raw or undercooked meats, fish (sushi), or shellfish, processed meats such as hot dogs and deli meats (these should be well cooked). Also, although fish and shellfish can be an extremely healthy part of your pregnancy diet (they contain beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and are high in protein and low in saturated fat), you should avoid eating: shark, swordfish, king mackere,l tilefish. These types of fish may contain high levels of mercury, which can cause damage to the developing brain of a fetus. When you choose seafood, eat a variety of fish and shellfish and limit the amount to about 12 ounces per week - that's about two meals. Also, when you're eating canned tuna, you may want to choose light tuna, which has less mercury than canned white tuna. You should eat no more than 6 ounces per week of canned albacore or white tuna. Also, it's a good idea to check any local advisories before consuming any recreationally caught fish.

Even common over-the-counter medications that are generally safe may be considered off-limits during pregnancy because of their potential effects on the baby. And certain prescription medications may also cause harm to the developing fetus. To make sure you don't take anything that could be harmful to your baby: Ask your health care provider which medicines - both over-the-counter and prescription - are safe to take during pregnancy. Talk to your health care provider about any prescription drugs you're taking. Let all of your health care providers know that you're pregnant so that they'll keep that in mind when recommending or prescribing any medications. Discuss any questions about natural remedies, supplements, and vitamins. If you were prescribed a medication before you became pregnant for an illness, disease, or condition you still have, consult with your health care provider, who can help you weigh potential benefits and risks of continuing your prescription. If you become sick (i.e., with a cold) or have symptoms that are causing you discomfort or pain (i.e., a headache or backache), talk to your health care provider about medications you can take and alternative ways to help you feel better without medication. Healthy Pregnancy Habits: From Start to Finish During pregnancy, from the first week to the fortieth, it's important to take care of yourself in order to take care of your baby. Even though you have to take some precautions and be ever-aware of how what you what you do - and don't do - may affect your baby, many women say they've never felt healthier than when they carried their children.

Folic Acid Supplements Recognized As Beneficial For Maternal and Infant Health... Recommendations to increase Folate (folic acid) intakes during the early stages of pregnancy may reduce mental and emotional health problems in children, says a new study.

Dutch researchers report that the children of mothers who took Folic Acid supplements during pregnancy were better behaved (including the ability internalize and externalize problems) compared to the children of mothers who did not take supplements, according to findings published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

The research adds to the mother and child benefits of Folic Acid, in addition to the established link at reducing the incidence of neural tube defects (NTDs). An overwhelming body of evidence links has linked Folate deficiency in early pregnancy to increased risk of NTDs, most commonly spina bifida and anencephaly in infants.

This connection led to the 1998 introduction of public health measures in the US and Canada, where all grain products are fortified with Folic Acid, the bioavailable form of Folate used in supplements.

Preliminary evidence indicates that the measure is having a beneficial effect with a reported 15 to 50% reduction in NTD incidence. In Chile, the measure has been associated with a 40% reduction in NTDs. A total of 51 countries now have some degree of mandatory fortification of flour with Folic Acid.

In the new study from Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam, researchers assessed the Folic Acid supplement use of the mothers of 4,214 toddlers during the first trimester of pregnancy using a questionnaire. The children underwent a behavioural test at age 18 months.

According to their findings, children of mothers who did not use folic acid supplements in the first trimester had a higher [44 per cent] risk of total problems. Children of mothers regularly using Folic Acid were protected from internalizing and externalizing their problems, even when the researchers took into account their mothers' characteristics.
Commenting on the potential mechanism, the researchers note several potential mechanisms including the role of Folates on the direct development of the central nervous system. This essential B-Complex vitamin plays a key role in the production of brain cel and has also been linked to the synthesis of various neurotransmitters.

Another possible mechanism is how Folate indirectly effects fetal growth, noting that Folic Acid supplements have been linked to heavier babies, and that a lower birth weight has previously been linked to to behavioural and emotional problems. "Inadequate use of folic acid supplements during early pregnancy may be associated with a higher risk of behavioural problems in the offspring" wrote the researchers. "Folic acid supplementation in early pregnancy, aimed to prevent neural tube defects, may also reduce mental health problems in children," they concluded.

HAVE A PREGNANCY CONCERN?

QUESTION/CONCERN:

Folic Acid & Iron
Linked to Better Baby Survival

Key Nutrients For
Maternal and Infant Health

Taking Folic Acid and Iron Supplements during pregnancy may reduce infant mortality up to age 7, suggests new research from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Supplements of Iron and Folic Acid reduced infant mortality by 31 per cent, according to findings published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Furthermore, the supplements reduced the prevalence of low birth weight by 16 per cent and the prevalence of maternal anaemia during pregnancy and after the birth period by 50 per cent. "To our knowledge this is the first time the long-term effects of maternal Iron-Folic Acid supplementation on childhood survival have been examined,"

"A reduction in mortality resulting from an intervention, such as Iron-Folic Acid supplementation during pregnancy, provides a new and previously unreported evidence of benefit to offspring during childhood," reported the research team. About 40 per cent of pregnant women worldwide are estimated to be anaemic. Despite the existence of an international policy for antenatal Iron-Folic Acid supplementation, women in many developing countries fail to receive the necessary micronutrients, added the researchers.

5,000 pregnant women in rural Nepal were recruited to take part in the randomized, double-blind, controlled trial. Women were divided into five groups: One group received Folic Acid only, the second group received Folic Acid plus Iron, the third received Folic Acid plus Iron plus Zinc, the fourth received multiple micronutrients, and the final group received Vitamin A and acted as the control group.

Out of the 4,130 babies born alive, 209 died in the first 3 months and 8 were lost to follow-up. Of the 3,761 remaining, the researchers report that 150 died between the ages of 3 months and 7 years, while 152 were lost to follow-up.

Improved Survival Rates For Mothers Children of mothers receiving the Folic Acid plus Iron supplements had the lowest mortality rate of 10.3 per 1,000 child-years from birth to age 7 years, compared to 13.4, 12.0, 14.0, and 15.2 for the Folic Acid, Folic Acid plus Iron plus Zinc, multiple micronutrients, and contro groups, respectively. "In a setting where maternal Iron deficiency and anaemia are common, we found a 31 percent reduction in childhood mortality due to maternal antenatal and postnatal supplementation with Iron-Folic Acid compared to a control.and that such results provide additional motivation to increase global programs for antenatal iron and Folic Acid supplementation" the researchers concluded.

"Following their previous demonstration that Iron-Folic Acid supplementation during pregnancy increased birth weight, the researchers have now provided unique data on the critica importance of this intervention for improving child survival. This strong evidence should re-energize programs for the delivery of this critical intervention for maternal and child health,"

Good Herbal Therapeutics During Pregnancy Never replace prescribed medications with herbal therapy, herbal therapeutics work side by side with prescription medicine. VERY IMPORTANT: ask your doctor about any possible interactions between herbal products and prescribed medications. To quell pregnancy jitters, "nervous stomach," cramps, chamomile, especialy chamomile tea. Avoid Valerian and St. John's Wort during third and fourth terms. Aloe Vera, in capsule form, ingested with liquid, will lubricate your inner organs and reduce stretch marks, as will rubbing Pure Virgin Olive Oil on your abdominal area. Green Tea will boost the nutrients you take during pregnancy and L.Acidophillus, in yogurt or pill form, will boost friendly bacteria into your intestinal tract to counteract the not so friendly bacteria (E-coli, for example, which is very unhealthy for baby). LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS,
BIFIDOBACTERIUM BIFANTES ("ALIGN")

The "probiotic" or "friendly: bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus (L'Acidophilus), which is naturally found in the stomach/intestines. Sometimes antibiotics can disrupt the normal balance of bacteria in the stomach/intestines which causes diarrhea. This product is used for diarrhea due to antibiotic use and can help restore the normal balance of intestinal bacteria. It has also been used for vaginal and urinary tract infections. Some diet supplement products have been found to contain possibly harmful impurities/additives. Check with your pharmacist for more details regarding the particular brand you use. The FDA has not reviewed this product for safety or effectiveness. The probiotic bacteria is naturally found in real yogurts and certain other dairy products. Our bodies need the good bacteria for proper digestion of food and related enzyme function. Often, when we take an antibiotic (Zyvox, Vancomycin, Ampicillin, Amoxicillin, etc.) the good bacteria is destroyed with the bad bacteria which caused the infection or virus. Even stress can deplete the body's supply of the beneficial bacteria. For these and other reasons, a Gastro-Intestinal specialist or primary physician may recommend probiotic intake.

Probiotics are found in most yogurts, fresh or frozen. It is a good health idea to include yogurt in your daily diet. Probiotics are also found in capsules sold at most pharmacies and health food stores.

The most common probiotic supplement is Lactobicillus Acidophilus, usually marketed as L'Acidophilus. As with any oral ingestive, L'Acidophilus may have contraindications (side effects). especially of you are allergic to dairy products.Generally, increase in stomach gas may occur, but usually goes away with continued treatment. If this effect persists or worsens, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. An allergic reaction to this product is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. L'Acidophilus should not be taken if you have : allergies to milk/lactose products. Before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: diarrhea lasting more than 2 days (especially if you also have a high fever); other known contraindications, include vaginal infections, urinary tract infections. Before taking L'Acidophilus, ask your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

The newest kid on the probiotic block, getting some deserved rave reviews, is Bifidobacterium Bifantis. The most effective strain, Bifants 35624 is marketed under the brand name "Align" by Proctor & Gamble who currently holds the patent. Many persons, including this writer (we get ailments, too) who have had chronic stomach distress due to use of antibiotics or such conditions as ulcerations, celiac-sprue or digestive disorders, have found relief with Align, one capsule per day. The relief does not come cheaply, the MSRP for 28 capsule packs is $39.95' prices at pharmacy chains such as Walgreens or CVS range from $28.00 to $29.95.

Other probiotic culture strains can be found in dairy products, the snag here is persons who are allergic to lactate, cassein or other types of milk protein. The alternative is to try the herb Lactose which may counteract the allergy, or purchase probiotics in capsule form if staying away from dairy products. Kirkman Laboratories specializes in emulating all strains of probiotics, including the rare L'Ehinan, in capsule form.

CANADIAN GOVERNMENT TARGETS NEW LABELLING REQUIREMENTS
TO PROTECT WELLNESS OF CANADIANS WITH FOOD ALLERGIES

Canada's Minister of Health, Tony Clement, announced increased protection for Canadians with food allergies by introducing new labelling requirements for food allergens, gluten sources and added sulphites contained in prepackaged foods. Health Canada also announced the launch of several allergy studies, including a large national study of food allergy prevalence, and two studies on the dietary habits and coping skills of people with celiac disease who are on a gluten-free diet. "The Government of Canada is taking action to protect the health and well being of Canadians with food allergies and celiac disease," said Minister Clement. "These new proposed labelling requirements will provide Canadians with the information they need to manage their own allergies, and give parents greater assurance about the food they give their children who may have allergies." The current Food and Drug Regulations require that ingredients of food products be declared on the labels of most prepackaged foods. However, components of certain ingredients are exempted from declaration in the list of ingredients. While the Canadian Food Inspection Agency does have the ability to recall foods exempted from the labelling requirements/

Shoulf a health risk be identified, new labelling regulations will provide manufacturers with clear rules for allergens to be followed in a systematic and consistent manner, aimed at reducing the number of food recalls and allergic reactions.

The improved regulations would require that manufacturers declare all food allergens on labels of prepackaged foods. The regulations would also detail exactly how these allergens are to be listed on food labels.

This consideration is yet another step the Government of Canada has taken to improve and protect the health and well being of Canadians through strengthened food and product safety standards. Other recent initiatives have included the tabling of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, which will allow the government to order recalls for health and consumer products and better protect Canadians from unsafe products; tightening the definition of "made-in-Canada" and "product-of-Canada" labelling; and showing international leadership in the safe management of chemical substances used in the production of many common household products through the Chemicals Management Plan. Canadian Health Minister Clement today also called on industry to take proactive steps to improve the labelling of food allergens to allow Canadians with allergies to better identify foods that are safe for themselves and their children. "Ensuring safe foods for Canadians is a collaborative effort between government, industry and consumers," said Minister Clement. "Until the regulatory amendments proposed by my department are enacted, we are asking industry to be proactive in improving labelling of food allergens and gluten sources to protect the health of Canadians." "Reading food labels is the first line of defence for food allergic consumers," said Laurie Harada, Executive Director of Anaphylaxis Canada. "Making sure that Canadians can identify foods which could cause an allergic reaction is essential. The proposed regulatory amendments will be an important tool to protect and improve the quality of life for food-allergic consumers." The food allergy prevalence study initiated by AllerGen, the Allergy, Genes and Environment Network and co-sponsored by Health Canada, will look to provide accurate data on how many Canadians suffer from food allergies, as well as information on the types of food most commonly known to cause allergies. It is the largest study to date on the prevalence of food allergies in Canada, and is co-led by researchers from McGill and McMaster Universities. Results from these studies are expected to give Canadian researchers, government officials and the allergic community essential information on the scope and impacts of food allergies in Canada. The two research studies to be conducted in collaboration with the Canadian Celiac Association will examine how individuals manage gluten-free diets, and the psychological impact that living on a gluten-free diet has on the daily life of an individual with celiac disease. The information this survey will generate will be used to create a better awareness and understanding of gluten-free diets by health care providers, policymakers and the food industry.

DIABETES PREVENTION

August 2009 Duke University Report
points to herbal Carnitine
as a Type II Diabetes preventitive

Robert Edwards at Vitamin Power laboratories has written this report about new studies at Duke University Medical Center relevannt to glucose intolerance and diabetes:

A team of researchers from the Duke Sarah W. Stedman Nutrition and Metabolism Center, including scientists from the departments of medicine, pharmacology and cancer biology performed tests on human muscle cells that showed supplementing with Carnitine might help older people with prediabetes, diabetes, and other disorders that make glucose (sugar) metabolism difficult.

Carnitine is made in the liver and recycled by the kidney, but in some cases when this is insufficient, dietary Carnitine from red meat and other animal foods can compensate for the shortfall.

After just eight weeks of supplementation with Carnitine, laboratory subjects restored their cells' fuel-burning capacity (which was shut down by a lack of natural carnitine) and improved their glucose tolerance, a health outcome that indicates a lower risk of diabetes. These results offer hope for a new therapeutic option for people with glucose intolerance, older people, people with kidney disease, and those with type 2 diabetes (also known as adult-onset diabetes).

The Duke researchers began studying Carnitine more closely when abnormalities in the nutrient emerged from blood chemistry profiles of obese and old animals. These chemical profiles report on hundreds of by-products of cell metabolism called metabolites and give scientists an opportunity to identify markers of disease states.

Carnitine is a natural compound known for helping fatty acids enter the mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells, where fatty acids are "burned" to give cells energy for their various tasks. Carnitine also helps move excess fuel from cells into the circulating blood, which then redistributes this energy source to needier organs or to the kidneys for removal. These processes occur through the formation of acylcarnitine molecules, energy molecules that can cross membrane barriers that encase all cells.

Researchers at Duke had observed that skeletal muscle of obese rats produced high amounts of the acylcarnitines, which requires free Carnitine. As these molecules started to accumulate, the availability of free, unprocessed Carnitine decreased. This imbalance was linked to fuel-burning problems, that is, impairments in the cells' combustion of both fat and glucose fuel. "We suspected that persistent increases in acylcarnitines in the laboratory subjects were causing problems, and we could also see that the availability of free Carnitine was decreasing with weight gain and aging, It appeared that carnitine could no longer do its job when chronic metabolic disruptions were stressing the system. That's when we designed an experiment to add extra Carnitine to the diet."

The work was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, and the American Diabetes Association, and a John A. Hartford Duke Center f

A protective effect of high intakes of omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) was observed according to findings published today in the European Journal of Heart Failure.

Omega-3 fatty acids, most notably DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), have been linked to a wide range of health benefits, including reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and certain cancers, good development of a baby during pregnancy, joint health, and improved behaviour and mood.

In this study the highest intake of marine omega-3 fatty acids linked to a reduction in the risk of heart failure of 33 per cent. However, larger intakes did not appear to offer any additional benefit. "Scientists and health authorities are increasingly persuaded that the intake of fish - even in small amounts - will protect against the risk of fatal myocardial infarction," said nutrition investigators from Wageningen University.

The Netherlands-based researchers recruited 5,299 men and women in 1990 with an average age of 67.5 who were free of heart failure. Over an average of 11.4 years of follow-up a total of 669 people developed heart failure.

Heart failure, which arises when the heart can no longer pump enough blood to meet the body's needs, is the leading cause of hospitalisation among the over 65s, and is characterized by such symptoms as fatigue and weakness, difficulty walking, rapid or irregular heartbeat, and persistent cough or wheezing.

The highest average intake of EPA plus DHA (over 183 mg per day) was associated with an 11 per cent reduction in the risk of heart failure, compared to the lowest average intake (less than 34 mg per day), but this was not statistically significant. In women, the highest intakes were associated with a 25 per cent risk reduction, and this was approaching significance, said the researchers.

The strongest effects were observed for diabetics, with the highest versus lowest intakes associated with a 42 per cent reduction in risk. A study with older US adults, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in 2005 (Vol. 45, pp. 2015-2021), reported risk reduction of about 20 per cent for one to two weekly servings of fish. "The mean intake of fish in our study was about 16 g, which roughly equals one serving of fish per week," wrote the Dutch researchers.

It is possible that the type of fish consumed, or preparation methods, differs between Europe and the USA.

AUTISM & OMEGA-3 FACTORS

A combination of Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Vitamin E may lead to speech improvements in autistic children with verbal disorders, suggests a new study. Verbal apraxia is a speech disorder common in autism, and an estimated 50 per cent of children with autism have apraxia. Furthermore, many thousands more are reported to have apraxia but are not autistic.

According to new research published in the journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, daily supplements of Omega-3 and Vitamin E were associated with improvements in speech, imitation, eye contact, and behavior.

Researchers from the Children's Hospital and Research Center Oakland (CHRCO) and Saint Vincent Medical Center in New York recruited families with experiences of Omega-3 Fatty Acid and Vitamin E supplementation.

"The results of the study are significant in that 97 per cent of the participants with apraxia and/or on the autism spectrum reported dramatic improvements while taking a combination of Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Vitamin E. "The study represents the largest summary of children with apraxia to date," "Antidotal evidence had previously shown that Omega-3 can help children with apraxia and those known as 'late talkers'. The researchers discovered that they symptoms presented by children with apraxia mirror those of Vitamin E deficiency," "The addition of high dose Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Vitamin E is the breakthrough" noted the researchers.

The researchers recruited 187 children with verbal apraxia who had received Vitamin E plus polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation. They noted that verbal apraxia is not only a speech disorder but rather a complex syndrome that affects a person's neurologic function. A subgroup of children emerged, characterised by autism, sensory issues, low muscle tone, food allergy, coordination problems, and impaired gastrointestinal function. The presence of multiple allergies and intestinal problems are associated with nutritional deficiencies including Vitamin E, Omega-3, and Carnitine. Following supplementation, 181 families (97 per cent) reported "dramatic improvements in a number of areas", said the researchers. These included speech, behaviour, eye contact, and other sensory issues. "We characterize a novel apraxia phenotype that responds to polyunsaturated fatty acids and Vitamin E," wrote the researchers. "Appropriate screening may identify a subgroup of children with a previously unrecognized syndrome of allergy, apraxia, and malabsorption who are responsive to nutritional interventions in addition to traditional speech and occupational therapy," they added.

"Controlled trials in apraxia and autism spectrum disorders are warranted," concluded the researchers. Bolton confirmed that work is now ongoing in this area, with the a clinical study and protocol designed to continue to understand the impact Omega-3 and Vitamin E have on autism and verbal apraxia, and to begin to determine the underlying mechanisms in verbal apraxia.

Former professional football players with large bodies don't appear to have the same risk factors for heart disease as their non-athletic counterparts, UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers have found in studying a group of former professional players from the National Football League (NFL).

Compared to other men in a similar age range, retired NFL players had a significantly lower prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, sedentary lifestyles and metabolic syndrome, the study authors report. The scientific findings appear in the September issue of the American Journal of Cardiology.

The researchers noted "Despite their large body size, retired NFL players do not have a greater prevalence of heart disease risk factors when compared to the general population. In fact, other factors such as age and high cholesterol levels were better predictors for heart disease than the body size of the former athletes in our study." When body mass index (BMI) standards are applied, more than half of all professional football players are considered overweight or obese, which is considered an indicator for heart disease risk. Interestingly, although a majority of these players are not as fit and active after retirement, they still had fewer risk factors for heart disease than men of the same age and body size from the Dallas Heart Study, a groundbreaking investigation of cardiovascular disease that involves thousands of Dallas County residents.

Staying physically fit earlier in life might have offset the risks associated with a large body size. The study examined 150 former pro athletes and 150 normal counterparts from the Dallas Heart Study with an average age of 55. The median BMI for both groups was higher than 31, which is considered to be in the obese range. Retired NFL players didn't get a totally clean bill of health, however. As a group they were found to have developed similar amounts of coronary atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) as the group of non athletes. Although they were less likely to have diabetes, they had higher rates of pre-diabetes, high fasting blood-sugar numbers that increase their risk for developing diabetes in the future.

The study authors' scientific investigation with a high-profile group could have far-reaching implications. More than 60 percent of offensive and defensive linemen at the high-school level, they note, also can be characterized through BMI as overweight or obese. "The good news is that as long as you remain active and fit, even with a larger body, you can lower your risk for heart disease," the doctors explained. "The bad news is that being a professional athlete doesn't eliminate your risk for developing heart disease later in life. Even professional athletes may be at risk for developing heart disease as they age."

The doctors concluded professional athletes should continue exercise regimens after their professional careers are over. For the public at large, the study reaffirms that exercise is an important way to decrease the risk for heart disease.

UTAH Southwestern researchers contributed to the study of as well as researchers from the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, the University of Washington, Emory University School of Medicine, the Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute, and the Living Heart Foundation.

NEW STUDY STATES GREEN TEA
GOOD FOR BONE & JOINT HEALTH

Naturopaths and more recently conventional medicine has touted Green Tea as an excellent antioxidant and stress reliever. Now, the Journal Of Agriculture adds bone health to the benefits.

A new study shows specific natural compounds from Green Tea may lead to stronger bones by promoting bone formation, while also inhibiting bone resorption, which leads to weakening.

This new study looked at three tea compounds called epigallocatechin (EGC), gallocatechin (GC), and gallocatechin gallate (GCG), and found that EGC produced the greatest bone boosting potential. "Our study has provided the first laboratory evidence on the bone promotion effects of the green tea catechin EGC as was demonstrated by the promotion of osteoblastic differentiation and inhibition of osteoclast formation," wrote researchers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong report their findings in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Osteoblasts are cells responsible for bone formation, while osteoclasts are cells which break down bone, ultimately leading to resorption and weakening. The study is consistent with data from epidemiological studies. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Oct. 2007, Vol 86, pp. 1243-1247) reported that bone mineral density levels were 2.8 per cent greater in tea drinkers than non-tea drinkers, suggesting the beverage has the potential to aid in the prevention of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is currently second only to cardiovascular disease in terms of global healthcare burden, according to the World Health Organization. This condition affects nearly 200 million people today but the number of sufferers is expected to increase steadily with growing numbers of elderly living longer, and obesity adding extra strain on bone health. Green tea contains between 30 and 40 per cent of water-extractable polyphenols, while black tea (green tea that has been oxidized by fermentation) contains between 3 and 10 per cent.

The four primary polyphenols found in fresh tea leaves are epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, and epicatechin. EGC was found to stimulate bone mineralization, while simultaneously inhibiting the formation of osteoclasts. The other catechins were found to be less effective;

"The present study illustrated that the tea catechins, specifically EGC, had positive effects on bone metabolism through a double process of promoting osteoblastic activity and inhibiting osteoclast differentiations," explained the researchers. "Our observations would serve as groundwork for further studies," they concluded.

400BC GREEKS HAD IT RIGHT:
NEW STUDY HAILS CHOCOLATE AS AN ANTI-DEPRESSANT

Ancient Greeks used chocolate as an "aphrodisiac," their combo "uppers" and Viagra. New Evidence That Dark Chocolate Helps Ease Emotional Stress

The "chocolate cure" for emotional stress is getting new support from a clinical trial published online in ACS' Journal of Proteome Research. The study found that eating about an ounce and a half of dark chocolate a day for two weeks reduced levels of stress hormones in the bodies of people feeling highly stressed. This favorite treat also helped correct other stress-related biochemical imbalances.

Researchers noted growing scientific evidence that antioxidants and other beneficial substances in dark chocolate may reduce risk factors for heart disease and other physical conditions. Studies also suggest that chocolate may ease emotional stress. Until now, however, there was little evidence from research in humans on exactly how chocolate offers the "stress-busting" effects.

In the study, scientists identified reductions in stress hormones and other stress-related biochemical changes in volunteers who rated themselves as highly stressed and ate dark chocolate for two weeks. "The study provides strong evidence that a daily consumption of 40 grams [1.4 ounces] during a period of 2 weeks is sufficient to modify the metabolism of healthy human volunteers," the scientists say. IONIZER AIR CLEANERS INEFFECTIVE AND A HEALTH THREAT
GOVERNMENT, CONSUMER'S REPORT SAYS

Ionizing air cleaners get zapped
By Elizabeth Weise, USA TODAY

Popular and expensive ionizing air cleaners a staple of late-night infomercials could expose users to lung-damaging levels of ozone, and they do a poor job of actually cleaning the air, according to a study in the May issue of Consumer Reports. The magazine tested six popular ionizing cleaners and one HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter. It found that two of the ionizing cleaners emit 150 to 300 parts per billion of ozone in samples taken 2 inches from the machine, while three other ionizing cleaners are in the 26-to-48-ppb range. The Environmental Protection Agency's standards for outdoor ozone concentration exposure is 80 parts per billion over eight hours.

"Anyone who has respiratory problems might think, 'The closer I get this thing to my head while I'm sleeping, the better.' Those people will be exposed to relatively high levels of ozone, which is not a good thing," says Mark Connelly, the magazine's director of testing. "In normal people, exposure to ozone levels of 100 parts per billion causes injuries to the airways," says Dean Sheppard, director of the Lung Biology Researcher Center at the University of California-San Francisco. "It also produces an effect in the airways of normal people that's like what you see in people with asthma: shortness of breath and wheezing."

Studies by researchers at UCSF and Yale University also have shown that even small increases in ozone are associated with reduced lung function and increased mortality rates. Casey Fisher, president of Surround Air, which makes one of the models on Consumer Report's "not recommended" list, disputed the results and says tests conducted by "an independent lab prove that the ozone level produced by the XJ-2000 is well beneath safety standards at as close as 1 foot away, and even less." The magazine found that five of the six ionizing cleaners don't clean very well. "They were all ineffective in removing pollen, dust and smoke from air," says Jeff Asher, the magazine's technical director.

Robert Padgett of Brookstone says its Pure Ion air cleaner has "one of the highest clean-air delivery rates of any product in its class," according to independent tests. Doctors don't recommend air filters for patients with allergies and asthma, says Sheppard. Animal dander especially isn't readily removed by such filters because it gets caught in furniture or rugs, he says But more than 80% of air cleaners are purchased become someone in the home has asthma or allergies, magazine editor Robert Markovich says. And ionizing air cleaners account for about 25% of the roughly $410 million Americans spend on air cleaners each year.

There is no government oversight over ionizing air cleaners. If the product is not making a medical claim, it doesn't fall under the Food and Drug Administration's jurisdiction, spokeswoman Julie Zawisza says. The EPA would require congressional authority to set indoor air standards, spokesman Dave Ryan says. However, the agency's Web site warns of the adverse effects of even a relatively small amount of ozone. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is reviewing scientific literature on the effects of ozone-generating air cleaners. It expects to complete its study this fall, spokesman Steve
