who was executed as a warlock accused of

THE EVOLUTION OF THE CULT/HORROR EXPLOITATION MOVIE GENRE
THEY WERE THE LAST GASP
FOR THE HUGE, DECAYING "WHITE ELEPHANT" BIG CITY SIDE STREET THEATRES
TO LATE NIGHT TV, TO VIDEO, TO THE INTERNET - WHERE (ALMOST) ANYTHING GOES!
Make no mistake about these once majestic urban theatres. In the 1940's, they were the showcases of new Hollywood releases...
Bogie, Bacall, Edward G., Bergman, the Oscar winners premiered at these thousand to three thousand seat single screen
cinemas. Times change. In the late 1960's RKO-Stanley Warner created the multi screen theatres built amidst new suburban
shopping malls on major highways (Ironically, they were the first "old school" chain to go belly up in the 80's and
sell out to Cineplex-Odion ...and they went kaput in the late 90's). Other chains expanded the suburb shopping center multi-
screens and city theatres were left to fend for themselves. Unable to pay for mainstream major studio big name
releases, some turned to porn, most others craved the low budget exploitation products from unknown producers with
unknown or aging stars. This became, metaphorically, the Golden Age of Cult/Horror & Action Basement Cheapies,
from Olga's White Slaves Of Chinatown to the Troma debut, The Incredible Torture Show (Blood Sucking Freaks.
Dyanne Thorne as the sadistic Ilsa: She Wolf Of The SS beat out Mr. Universe Mickey Hartigay's Bloody Pit...
as well as Undertaker & His Pals, The Corpse Grinders, I Spit On Your Grave, I Eat Your Flesh, Mark Of The Devil,
and countless other churnouts. The biggest moneymaker by far in cult/horror exploitation, Ilsa: She Wolf...
played 17 continuous weeks at The Victoria Theatre in New York City's Times Square and about as many weeks
in other city markets. The film hit more hard top and drive in screens than even the later Rocky Horror
Picture Show and spawned two sequels Ilsa: Harem Keeper Of The Oil Shieks, Ilsa: Tigress Of Siberia
and an earlier Mexican film Dyanne appeared in was re-released and re-named Ilsa: Wicked Warden.
The Ilsa character was based on a 1962 German exploits, Ilse: Commandant Of The SS, Ilse: Deported Women
Of The SS in which Erna Shurer donned the dominatrix nazi uniform. The Ilse/Ilsa cult/horror exploitation
videos are still top sellers even though the old single screen movie houses which played them,
WIth the Betamax and, in the 80's, the 2 hour VHS home videocassette entertainment boom and now the perfected
digital remastered DVD, slews of these movies on video are out there and selling big time. Most of the producers
never see a penny of the sales. Ask the likes of directors Joe Sarno, the 60's monochrome mistress maven,
Dario Argento, the 70's cannibal jungle movie maven, or Jesse Franco,
the same era shockploitation wiz. Despite the pittance for on camera interviews (the DVD extra feature),
they've been financially scoffed...and this dosen't include the pirating.
Ironically, 'Hollywood Gloss Horror' would end the cult/horror exploitation cheapies and shutter the urban theatres/
Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre would break into the mainstream suburban cinemaplexes,
followed by Friday The Thirteenth, Nightmare On Elm Street, & Halloween. Slick, but comparatively less
costly than the big-namers, their major name distributors (Paramount, New Line, Columbia) and box office boffo
bucks would spell the end of the era that gave us Herschell Gordon Lewis' Blood Feast, Wizard Of Gore, 2000
Maniacs, Gore Gore Girls ...with Henny Youngman, that Henny Youngman and Meir Zarchi's I Spit On Your
Grave. (Trivia note: In 1987, Zarchi implemented a suit against Vidimax for their branding I Spit On
Your Grave Part 2 which Zarchi's attorneys alleged infringed on his making the sequel). Cult/Horror Exploitation
afficianados know that those 60's and 70's grindhouse flicks had their own special "flavor" which will never likely
be recaptured in this era of digital dazzle.
Enter The Late Night TV Cult/Horror Goblin & Goddesses!
You can argue whether it was John Zacherle on the East Coast, Vampira (Maila Nurmi) and her predecessor
mimic Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) on the West Coast, but what is defeinitive is what was: late night cult/horror hosted by wise cracking ghouls on independent
television stations which became an after hours broadcast phenomenon with tremedous followings (college kids hee hawing,
little kids ignoring forbiddings sneaking into the parlor after mom and dad went to sleep). Vampira and Elvira,
Mistresses Of The Night and Zacherle, the Cool Ghoul threw their own one-liners between scenes of heavily edited versions of cult/horror
flicks such as Blood Of Satan's Claw and Astro-Zombies. Vampira and Elvira were a copious cleavaged vampiresses
in black (the former successfully sued the latter for infringement). When some PTA leaders took a peek at the movies
the then privately owned broadcasters were running on VHF channels (scantily clad damsels in distress on torture racks, et al),
the word was out to the FCC to bury these shows, despite the ratings that drew scores of mail order ads. Zacherle
moved to doing a teen dance show on the now Spanish language channel 47 in Newark, New Jersey (also in hot water for
miniskirted pedestal dancers), while Vampira reluctantly appeared in Ed Woods' Plan 9 From Outer Space and
Elvira took advantage of the burgeoning home video market with her own cult/horror
movie satires and B movie compilations. Did we create The Midnight Horror Camp? No, we just weberized it
(soon to have an online host or hostess - stay tuned). The founders and pioneers were (in alphabetical order):
Maila Nurmo, Cassandra Peterson and John Zacherle.who got the whole goth
thingg= going before it was called goth!
Then, along came the internet, Vampira, Zach, Elvira, Vidimax MVU, Troma, e.g.
Argento, Herschel Gordon Lewis included. Ah, but then came the new underground web fads:
Goth, Dolcett, Vore, Gynophagia (which we would like the credit for originating
with Tenderloin in 1986 (yeah, no humility).
While the Midnight Horror Camp started
in urban theatres, drive-ins and late night TV as revisited here,
we added to the mix what we did create, The Vidimax Macabre Video Underground.
who, imitated but never quite duplicated, led the way with revival of cult/horror
exploitation in the 80's, pushing the shock envelope a bit further with somewhat crude,
roughcut slam edited 8mm film and video in contrast to the relatively gloss polish of
Troma and Franco.

Cannibal Cove, Child Of The Sabbat, The New York Centerfold Massacre, restored
