

Cerebral Classic Sci-Fi Well Worth The Re-Watching


When the furor raged over the original Star Trek cancellation
by NBC in 1968, The U.K.'s ATV came to the rescue of Trekkies with
Space: 1999 teaming up the head duo of Mission Impossible
(like Trek, also produved by Desilu at Paramount and also cancelled
by the geniuses at NBC), Martin Landau and wife, Barbara Bain.
To the Trekkies' dismay, TV critics lauded this as a superior
scifi fare. But, at best, in reality was a placebo that gapped
between the Original Star Trek and Star Trek:
The Next Generation on which the ill fated UPN network was based
Like Trek, even in syndication, Space:1999 was cancelled
after three seasons. Nevertheless, it lives on via DVD boxed sets
and on Oldies Television.
Also Ran: "UFO"Gerry & Sylvia Anderson, who produced "Space: 1999"
also made "UFO" in 1970. It fared just so/so in the U.K. on BBC, but
bombed in U.S. syndication. For the record, it starred Ed Bishop, Craig Charles
and for decoration, Gabrielle Drake. The screenshot above may give some
indication why "UFO" didn't work.
