VALERIAN ROOT TO INDUCE SLEEP
cautions and contraindications

Valerian, (Valerian Root Herb), like Chamomile and Passion Flower, has a neurodepressant effect. However, Valerian is more potent. Not more than 1000 milligrams of Valerian should be taken in one 24 hour period. Valerian, in an excessive dose, may have a psychotropic effect. Never take Valerian with prescribed neurodepressants such as Neurontin (Gabapentin) or with sleep medications such as Ambien or Lunestra. Doing so could result in health, even life threatening risks. Do not take Valerian with alcoholic beverages, or drive a car after you have taken Valerian. Valerian will usually cause drowsiness within an hour. Do not give Valerian to children under 14. It is not a safe treatment for juvenile hypertension.

Valerian from an open capsule or in granular form, can be added to decaf tea or other beverage . It adds a bitter taste which may be diminished by using creamer and/or sweetener.

No one knows for certain how Valerian works in the human system. Herbal remedies have not been evaluated by the Food & Drug Administration or the American Medical Association. Sellers may not claim herbals diagnose, treat, or cure any ailment including insomnia. Valerian is chemically and intrinsically different from over the counter or prescription sleep aids.

Remember, Valerian can be a hazardous herbal calmative if taken excessively, combined with other herbal sleep/calm aids such as Passion Flower or Chamomile, with any prescription sleep inducers such as Ambien, Ambien CR or Lunestra, or any over the counter sleep aids such as Sominex, or if taken after consuming alcoholic beverages. Any of these misuses can result in hallucinative affectation,, psychotropic and/or psychohypnotic affectation, coma, or death.
